They probably have an expired airworthiness certificate, you would have to fly in a set of technicians, get them repaired, get about 200,000 lbs of blue, and two 747 certified pilots, possibly an engineer, and then pay the fees and the scrap value, and they are yours, that is for each craft. This is not to mention the return tickets for the pilots, technicians if they are from another destination, the cost of getting a renewal on the certificate, and it would also need to be valid at your destination or you could get a fine, and parts, you cannot leave a jet idle for three years and not expect parts to break. Tarmac fees alone are prolly steep but negotiable. They might be worth something, the engines alone prolly have value if they are rebuilt.

Just to correct some of the misinformation and loose facts. Solar panels last in excess of 50 years, most are expected to survive 25, and the best guess is that they lose 1.25% of their remaining power each year. Thus solar panels are not dying as fast as described and any lost capacity could be made up by adding a few additional panels. With regard to some of the other statements, many systems can be replaced by abandon in place of the old-systems, and new modules could be added to the system in order to do this (with some additional piping). One of our more popular nay-sayers here has a tendency to overstate his case. Got to check his facts.

Though i have a problem with this, if a car can read my mind, suppose i see a rather attractive woman in an adjacent lane or walking down the sidewalk, does my car stroll over and flash its headlights and toot its horn?

This will never result in flying cars, unless the car is flying around on mimas. It produces thrust on earth, we do not know why, in that sence it is a 'drive'. However it has never been shown to produce thrust in an environment like space. People seem easily to forget, this thing produces 10 times more thrust than pure EM 'drive', but thats not very much thrust at all, discounting the energy in reaction mass of most thrusters, thrusters like ion drives and VASiMR produce alot more thrust per emf, and even these could not produce a flying car. No flying cars, no perpetual motion machines, none of that bs stuff, its simply a novelty that might give a long-lived science ship the ability to travel to multiple targets in the system, it might even allow an orbiter around pluto, thats pretty much the limit.- 29 replies

So we need to keep a mountain top in hawaii free of technology so that ethnic hawaiins can breed in peace? I dont get your point; is a rather interesting slant on a harmless, as far as i can tell thirty meter lenses are not particularly good at spying on folks romances, unless those romances are occurring on the moon, in which case the profound lack of oxygen would be a bigger romantic hurdle. ;^) -

Here's a solution, redice the mass of jupiter by 90%, the place earth-1, earth-2 and earth-3 in orbits aeound jupiter, get rid of all other moons around jupiter, get rid of mars and venus leave mercury.- 632 replies

I particularly like the part about earth colliding with venus after 1000 solar orbits. Neccesity is the mother of all invention, nothing gets you Fredinnites motivated toward interstellar travel than having their homeworkd become a crematorium after a few thousand years. Of course after the collision bits and pieces would shower Minervera with moon sized asteroids, and so all you would have left is a cold barely lifeless mars.- 632 replies

Science magazine has a new article on ITER. 27 November 2015 p. 1011 if you have a hard copy, follow the link if you don't . . .I always get my copy of science a week later than the normal world, not sure why. http://news.sciencemag.org/people-events/2015/11/more-delays-iter-fusion-project Officially now, things have been delayed for the full startup of ITER. Yes, I know hard to imagine that a fusion reactor project might be delayed. Completion now to 2025. One of the reasons the French atomic regulatory body has to determine if it might be a scary thing to finish a project on time (whatever excuse they give Im sure) it can all be handled by having a regulator on site during startup). Now the initial startup costs were 5bE went to 15bE and with the latest change 17bE. Luckily for the US the value of the Euro has fallen since the Greek thing.

I 've been burnt by liquid n2. Those cyroprotecting gloves dont work all that well, Its a deep long lasting pain (about 2 weeks) that feels like you have a bee sting about a half inch under the skin. Liquid n2 is excessive diificult to contain, it will crack most polyalkenes after several uses, dewer flask dont work all that well. If you try to run it through a line it boils and you have a vapor lock unless you place one end of the line under negative pressure. You could coat the copper with a spray foam insulator, but then that degasses quite readily under experimental conditions and you could not test the result. The biggest and most obvious issue is that moving liq n2 in a copper line adds momentum to the system, so this cannot be calculated out, even if the inlet and outlet where on the same point of the axis, the boiling of the nitrogen in the evaporator coil will create a constantly changing differential momentum. You would actually have to cool the whole thing to the boiling point of nitrogen, which is problematic because the the nitrogen in the air would begin to precipitate on the device, not to mention all the moisture and higher boiling point gases, you would have to displace the air of the system with helium. Dancing tests what essential function for scientific experimentation on mars? i seemed to have missed the non-elective course in dancing while in graduate school. How about testing robot by bend knees while maintaing balance, then bend over and pick up rock and place in basket? How about take shovel and dig down, then sweep off remaining dirt, then holster broom, unholster coring drill, drill core, reholster coring drill, remove chilsilng hammer chisle out section of rock along side core, chisle out core. Take probe insert into loose soils, analyze water percent, follow grid.

why would we do that? of course if earth was part of a binary, far away enough from the sun and the was no jupiter all of this would work. Fredinno is fretting about the specifics of a fantasy, make it real and his wheels wont spin quite so fast.- 632 replies

The thruster causes electrons to build up in nodes inside the cavity. Never heard anything about the super conducting stuff. Basically you need an rf generator that inserts near the juction if the cone and the resonator. Its not a drive until its proven to produce thrust in a stand alone state. If you have a microwave rf generator the nitrogen aint going to keep it cold for long. I don'think you need alot, these new graphite conductors may suffice.- 29 replies

Judging by the telemetry on the animated live stream and the fact there is a pericytherion in 2'45" i woukd say they have orbital insertion, now all they have to do is lower the apoapsis.

The quote system in the new GUI is not working well, propane has a pressurization problem when working at high temperatures, nativel at stp+20' methanol is more stable to use. The other problem is that propane is in large demand, its a volatile that comes from fracking, which will eventually taper. Methanol can be synthetically made without any organic starting materials 1. Take sea water add hcl, CO2 evolves, heat and apply slight vacuum. 2. condense and cool and add cold water, any number of reduction operations to form carbon monoxide 3. hydrogenate the carbon monoxide 4. the resultin formaldehyde is suitable for further reduction to methanol, it can also be pressurized for use as a fuel directly in closed systems. I should add that there are bacteria that can produce hydrogen directly, if you can couple a two cyst system you could produce pure oxygen and hydrogen in the same system, but unlike biofuel microbes you dont have to kill the microbes to extract the products. You just have to carefully separate hydrogen from oxygen.

I don't think hydrogen storage is the problem. Want to store hydrogen, take some tar sand oil, heat it up under pressure and add the hydrogen to it, it becomes oil. Lots of benzene in gasoline,oxidize it once with a good leaving group and hydrogenate it. You can even add hydrogen to metals. We have lots of things we can hydrogenate if that were and issue to increase density. But its not an issue. As far as hydrogen safety is concerned the synergy drive in a hybrid is far more cpmlex than the technology to safely store hydrogen. These issues being brought up are all red herring issues, just like the batteriy fears when hybrids first came out, nothing but noise.
