[1.2/1.3] Real Scale Sea Dragon 0.3.4 (2016-07-12)
Bonus Eventus replied to NecroBones's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Any plans to have this somehow launch from the sea like in the original design specs? Love to see how this would work with the new buoyancy system! -
The point of the xl-6 landing leg was to provide a very large landing leg for very big rockets/crafts, what would be the point of shrinking it down when you already have landing legs in the stock game that serve that purpose?

Looking at different color options today. Still wondering if the scale is right at 30M. It might work if it was a Rotating Multi-Megawatt Boiling Liquid-Metal Reactor as detailed here at Atomic Rockets. . I've also considered repurposing if as a fuel tank if i decide to go with a different type of reactor. I mostly started making this because I felt that giant spherical shapes are part of the visual language of space travel and Kerbodyne Plus was lacking this type of form to build with. -

This is where I am with the nuclear reactor. Might add a couple more small structures here and there. Maybe some very thin tension cables to give it some scale. I really like how the geodesic sphere came out. This is the most detailed part model so far coming in at over 12,000 tris. Might be able to optimize that a bit. EDIT: Added some more details. Not sure if it needs it really :/ EDIT: Did one last test. I wanted to see what it would look like in game at double the size. Looks pretty good, even without the textures. Think I might keep it at 30M in diameter. -

I think having these super structures over top of the sphere looks more interesting than the normal map I was playing with before. I plan on adding more supports which are much bigger to give it some contrast. This is not a fuel tank, rather the first sketches of a nuclear reactor. -

haha, guess again if you guessed starship scale fuel tanks then you wouldn't be wrong I'm currently working on this: -

Upgraded the T404 truss sections. Now I need to give some love to the T202 trusses. The T404 trusses are for large storage (like assent vehicles) kind of like orbital shipyards. The T202 line of trusses have more of a structural focus with modular integrated enhancements, like batteries, antennae, and other devices to augment capabilities. I doubt anyone can guess what those orange structural parts are all about -

New MPD Engine Design for Kerbodyne Plus 1.1
Bonus Eventus replied to Bonus Eventus's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
You're spoiling me with all this great info—I really appreciate it! If that's the case then maybe what I should do is make a single engine MPD and a quad engine Vasimr. Well to be honest, I kind of intended that http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/realdesigns.php My goal is to have parts that will allow players to build ships like the Hope (MPD) as described at Atomic Rockets. However, I'm only including enough engines and generators to allow people to make a large interplanetary ship right out of the box. My hope would be that people mix and match other mods with mine to make some really unique and awesome spacecraft. And yes I plan on adding waste heat for the solar panels and some of the other parts I have in the works, like the data server and fusion reactor. Actually you can! Just check all the boxes, haha— Glad you like the designs- 29 replies

Kerbodyne Plus Development Thread

Did a little research into different engines for reaction control systems. R-4D apollo program RCS thruster https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-4D Hypergolic (ignites by way of chemical mixture. No ignition) liquid engine. NTO / MMH propellant storable (non-cryogenic) propellant Propellant is stored in pressurized tanks. When the tank valve is loosened, both gases mix in a mixing chamber then quickly expand through the nozzle. Simple system. Highly reliable and tanks do not need to be fueled at launch. Low thrust Resistojet https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistojet_rocket Provides thrust by electrically heating a non reactive propellant Small footprint Low thrust SuperDraco https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperDraco high-thrust hypergolic engine NTO / MMH propellant storable (non-cryogenic) propellant 73 kn of thrust 3d printed After doing this bit of research (admittedly, I should have done more before jumping into the modeling) I think it would make more sense to model the RCS engines off of the SuperDraco engines seeing as they're the only RCS engines I could find with a comparable amount of thrust required for the Behemoth Payloads. Just not sure how to translate the design into all the different configurations (x4, x3, x2) EDIT: Updated the rcs quad block -
New MPD Engine Design for Kerbodyne Plus 1.1
Bonus Eventus replied to Bonus Eventus's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
@FreeThinker I actually was wondering about that. The thought that the magnetic fields would affect each other adversely, had crossed my mind. I actually didn't know that the vasimr wasn't an MPD. I see on the Ad Astra page for the vasimr that it uses radio waves to superheat the plasma, so in a sense it works similarly to a chemical rocket and doesn't use the lorentz force like MPDs. The magnetic fields then are only to contain the plasma and don't act to accelerate it. However, just so you know, I wasn't showing the vasimr as an example of an mpd per say but as an example of construction methodology. Thanks for the info though!- 29 replies

New MPD Engine Design for Kerbodyne Plus 1.1
Bonus Eventus replied to Bonus Eventus's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
some of the models actually have a cathode in the exhaust port, but since the cathode glows it's hard to see with the other glow effects. The design isn't dependent on anything more than a tube with the proper means of creating the magnetic field to separate the plasma from the engine body, housing for the electrical connections (as I understand, isn't generated by the mpd device internally) and the simple cylindrical shape of the nozzle. As you can see in the second image (a scale mockup of the two engine cluster) The outer housing can take on any shape they wish for the most part. Even in the first image of the vasimr test platform, the structural frame takes the shape of something (from a design perspective) arbitrary, in this case a hexagon. The only real point of realism then is the nozzles. Which could be justified in any number of ways, but I take your point. I'll just say that I don't know that I would want to make a replica of such a plain looking engine.- 29 replies

we'll see... WIP Large RCS Quad Block #1 Experiment with stubby camera-lens-like rcs nozzle #2 A more traditional apollo style RCS nozzle (if I go with this option, I think I'll make the nozzles shiny metal instead) EDIT: Decided I'd go with option 2, but update the looks a little bit. -

I tried to reproduce the error on my system but I'm on a Mac. Do me a favor, start the game again. When you've loaded the game and are at the space center, press alt f2. This will pull up the debug console. Scroll down and look for any orange text. Take a screenshot and post it here. Then proceed to activate the decoupler. If it crashes, find your log file (it's in the same folder your gamedata folder is in) and post the last 10 or so lines. That will help me tremendously. I checked the debug console on my end, and nothing weird showed up. -
Hello everyone! Kerbodyne Plus V1.1 is coming soon, and in the new version I'm adding a MPD(magnetoplasmadynamic) engine. Help me choose which design to go with in this poll posted in Addon Development

Version 1: Radial Small Tanks & Rounded Shroud - 4 Nozzles Version 2: Single Large Nozzle Version 3: Cubic Shroud - 4 Nozzles Version 4: Cubic Shroud & Round Magnetic Chamber - 4 Nozzles Version :5 Rounded Shroud & Cubic Shrouds - 4 Nozzles Version 6: Round to Cubic Shroud - 4 Nozzles Version 7: Superstructure & Cubic Shrouds - 4 Nozzles Version 8: Tapered Rounded Shroud & Cubic Shrouds - 12 Nozzles Hello forum people! Please help me decide which of the above engine designs to choose for the new MPD in Kerbodyne Plus V1.1! Please keep in mind that picking a direction should be about the general idea and not about level of detail. The finalized model will receive more detail than even the most detailed sketch presented here. Anyways, thanks to everyone who votes in this poll for helping me decide!

Although I really like this design, with the outer supports, I don't think it will work for the MPD, because I plan to have a similar structure to support the rows of magnets used for the confinement fields of the fusion engine. -

wanted to do some more experiments before I choose a direction. With this one I wanted to see how a smooth transition from a circular profile to a square one would work with the design. It looks a little too simple. One thing I'm trying not to do with this design is make it look too uniform. I want to make sure it looks like an engine that was meant for the vacuum of space. Adding that smooth shape works against me. But hey, that's why I do experiments first
