Gigantors for a distant ion-powered flight
Nich replied to Sharpy's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Rather then a full array why not go with a large battery (2000-3000), 2 6 panel solar cells, rtg and single fuel cell and round 8. It should buy you 2-3 minutes of burn time which should suffice for most burns. when you need a longer burn you can turn on the fuel cell to increase your burn time and you have an RTG to refill the battery in the Jool system. All the systems really synergize well -
clearly your going to have to disallow KER and MJ since you can get all of the info you would need off the map. Can you use the tracking center for adjustment burns?

"Multiple launches are allowed, Sum up wight/parts/cost of all launches. All launches helping the mission must be counted." Impressive landings with incredibly low TWR. How low was it on the Mun?
-
Yes I had just gotten done with a 50 or 60 day trip to mun and minimus I was afraid to restart the game because I had never loaded a quick save after a restart and I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get to the plane quick enough before it crashed into the ground Heat bars are for delicate equipment in the cargo bay everything on the craft had cooled down to less than glowing by then and landing 2 kilometers from KSP on Grass was very easy. It was just a matter of stopping before I hit the invisible wall and wings would still blow up while rolling on the ground or texting at 10 m/s
-
I get that if you try to do more then one at a time. They were added and the game freaked out. Try restarting then recollecting the data

Red crown I was trying to find your 9th part and couldnt for the life of me until I saw that 1 dam solar panel lol. I bet a million kerbals I would have forgotten that on a low part challenge lol

Just make sure the inertial dampeners are off

BAH it happened again. I quicksaved just 2 minutes out so I got 15 tries at it. No mater how slow or how easy I came in wings would explode every time about 500m from the runway. I even landed short and taxied in and wings exploded while taxing. Just recovered it 2 km from KSP in the end this time. - - - Updated - - - Just checked out the link and yes this is exactly what happened. Always quick save before landing

This is why I love Kerbal alarms it automatically makes backups of the persistence file when you switch ships. I have no issues reverting in this case. I do however have done this before so I no longer delete debris. I just hide it in the tracking station so it doesn't clutter up my map. Persoanlly if you cant revert or restore I would cfg them back and hyperedit them back to the Mun. Dieing to a debris delete is just dumb I wish it actually checked for crew before issuing the are you sure message.

Leader board updated, apologies for not keeping up blame Nefrums for creating the small kerbin 2 challenge Bottling my home brew after work today so I wont be able to finish up the testing the leftovers until tomorrow.

Did it properly and optimised it a little. 8.6t 27 parts 34635 (recovered for 29918 so final cost that doesn't count is 4717 and I want an astric ) Descriptions are in the comments I will post the craft if anyone wants
-
10.9 t 32 parts 39,492 Kredits (whish I knew after recovered value) descriptions are in the comments I think I was attacked by the Kraken 10m from the runway and my last quick save was around the Mun. No desire to do that again since this is a failure anyways. Spontanious break up

I was doing some big 10 g maneuvers at 5000m and 500 m/s 30 seconds before to bleed off speed then in a tiny 1.5 g alignment the wings ripped off not 10 m from the runway. Anyone else seen this? I am really upset because it was for a challenge and I had spent 3 hours aero breaking and rendezvous with the craft.

Delta V from Mun orbit straight into Kerbin

Bare command pods do just fine hitting 35 km. My escape vehicles are a docking port junior, a command pod, decoupler, the second smallest 1.25m tank with 20 units of LF and matching OX, and a terrior -
Hell of a good looking station and in a polar orbit at that

What am I going to do with all these plane parts?
Nich replied to More Boosters's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I forgot rate of climb is directly related to power over steady state. However that only applies to <20 km and <1100 m/s above these values you are in orbital mechanics land and every ton of engine is a a ton less payload. -
I love how the descriptive text says not meant for atmospheric landings yet everyone does this and it works just fine lol. So my idea worked and failed at the same time. 10.9t 37,000 kredits 74 parts. I will post it after work so others can avoid my misfortune.

Nefrums I gave you credit for 6 kerbals. I am assuming you needed a pilot to fly back and didn't happen to have one on the station. Scarecrow development cost are simply the sum of (cost - recovery amount) for each flight. Because you didn't track the cost I will have to charge you 9,000 assuming all landings were perfect. You flew more flights then me but have a slightly smaller craft and didnt lose a wing or go to orbit. If you want to go through your test flight again and multiply that by 6 we can use that as the cost seeing as no reverts no quick saves is dependent on the honor code anyways. What is the recommended payload and what orbit should one expect to get it too?

Yes and no. In real life the light side of the craft is extremely hot and the dark side is extremely cold. This can be handled by slowly spinning the craft or with heat pipes that distribute the heat through the craft for satellites that can not spin. Engines produce very little heat as they use the cold liquid fuel to absorb it to run the pumps then it is burnt and expelled. I have never heard of a nuke engine in real life being used. I am not sure on nuke powered craft but i suspect they need heat on any craft with a nuke power supply. Generally you can control the temp by using the correct ratio of area exposed to dark space and bright sun.

I have never considered my time to be worth anything and have always tried to maximize my payload. I seen now it may be better to build a craft capable 20 degrees all the way to orbit at 5x time warp. If I could get to orbit in 5 real minutes it would might be worth it. Although the other problem is going past 60t payload as that is about what part count limits me to. They really need to add a 2.5 m variant of the rappier. - - - Updated - - - I had said it take 30 minutes to get to orbit in an SSTO which it does for an optimized one. And you cant warp it because it will blowup on physics warp. My more over powered designs take 15 (10 real) and warping 2x is risky. -
Ya with space planes hitting 50% payload and rockets only doing 28% they don't have a chance
