The James Webb Space Telescope and stuff
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Streetwind's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Tensioning delayed: power systems being looked at. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.space.com/amp/james-webb-space-telescope-sunshield-tension-delay Webb team is spending Sunday (Jan. 2) studying the observatory's power subsystem, NASA announced. "Nothing we can learn from simulations on the ground is as good as analyzing the observatory when it's up and running," Bill Ochs, Webb project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Maryland, said in an agency statement released Sunday (Jan. 2). "Now is the time to take the opportunity to learn everything we can about its baseline operations. Then we will take the next steps."- 869 replies

Thanks - wasn't aware of that

That's when we first noticed them affecting humans. You should look into SARS and MERS. They're naturally occurring earth viruses that jumped

History is a fascinating thing. Driven by the limits of the time, setting up there was (beyond being a literal gold mine) a fantastic 'choke point' economic site. I also hear the weather is nicer than Northern Europe. (Obligatory nod to the fact that there were others already using the place... but that happens... ...and is part of what makes human history interesting).

Can you explain this? I'm not understanding what you are asking. Corona of the sun? No. Corona beer? (grin)

I have seen it. Now I'm wondering if it is a problem with the camera tech or whether the Mark 1 Eyeball would be similarly affected...- 869 replies

The Analysis of Sea Levels.
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to mikegarrison's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Is the likely answer. We see natural selection and genetic manipulation since we started playing around with dogs, chickens, cows and more recently peas and flowers. Speciation is a larger issue - hard to argue that Mastiffs are different from Pugs when they don't produce mules (just messed up Dawgs). In the 'big events' where only some things have survived they do have a large impact on the next Period's flora and fauna - evolution is easier to point to. Regardless of the details, the answer is likely both. -

Differs from 'it will inevitably happen'. Part of what I was reacting to was a fatalistic tone in Sunlit's phasing. I'm not outright rejecting the possibility (the worst is in the realm of possibility), I just don't think it likely. -

3 Not sure the author is recommending the shifting of habitats, as much as reporting it. 1 Also - I'm not sure they're saying they evolved into a different species, rather that natural selection seems to be at play where certain characteristics of a species in a given area seem to be favored. Certainly that can lead to speciation, but if you put one long legged lizard in a box with a short legged lizard of the opposite sex, they'll still have lizard babies. Ummmm. It might happen. -

The James Webb Space Telescope and stuff
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to Streetwind's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Why would that be? I've been out in the deep desert many times on moonless nights and seen by starlight... Am I wrong to presume that the same would be true 'out there'? This part here is why I think there's no cameras; no real need for them- 869 replies

I'm going to hazard the guess that even partial sunshield deployment is a good thing - that 'tensioned' is a 'nice to have' (optimal) rather than a 'need to have'. Pure guess on my part - but for the money, you would expect some flexibility built into the design. So - this begs a question: at the operating temps on the cold side: what lubricants can they use? Graphite only - or are there other 'super cold' lubricants?- 869 replies

The Analysis of Sea Levels.
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to mikegarrison's topic in Science & Spaceflight
For those interested: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/56643993-hurricane-lizards-and-plastic-squid "... the remarkable story of how plants and animals are responding to climate change: adjusting, evolving, and sometimes dying out. Anole lizards have grown larger toe pads, to grip more tightly in frequent hurricanes. Warm waters cause the development of Humboldt squid to alter so dramatically that fishermen mistake them for different species. Brown pelicans move north, and long-spined sea urchins south, to find cooler homes. " -

Apologies to Spacescifi - please answer his question if you are able. Just wanted to share this - both because it's cool, and affected something near my old stomping grounds. The failure of the Oroville Dam: Also, how they fixed it: FYI - this is the only dam in the US taller than the Hoover Dam -
Gonna say the 'quiet part' out loud:
JoeSchmuckatelli replied to JoeSchmuckatelli's topic in Prelaunch KSP2 Discussion
That's the thing, isn't it? Multiple game studios are doing that now... And at times it is disappointing or moderately abusive to players (making them pay for a half - a'd game the studio has no interest in ever finishing)... But in the case of KSP 2? I'd risk it. (The flip side is - if you are right, the games not coming out till 23 or 24 anyway) -
There's really no other game I'm looking forward to. I'd really, really like some indication that we might see KSP2 on Steam Early Access sometime before June. I'd accept a rough product: Kerbal it up! Don't care. Will buy and enjoy while you polish it. No Second SolarSystem or Multi-Player or Console at Steam Early Access? Yep - that's a buy. Limited number of parts and limited ability to build outposts? Buy. Work in Progress stamps all over the place? Buy. I know we're not supposed to say this. I know we're supposed to be 'quietly supportive'... but There hasn't been another game I've felt 'kid in a candy-store'-like for a while. So please accept my apology for saying this... but I could not resist. Me wants!

Too much credit given for both paranoia and forward thinking. America is a place of cluttered basements. This is more likely: -

@DDE & @kerbiloid Totally off topic - but hear that WG has sued a bot coder in Russia for allegedly driving players away from WOT. You guys have any info? (WOT forums notably hostile to non Russian speakers - hope you don't mind me asking, here)
