Kerbol's SOI is technically infinite, so no matter how far you go you'll still be getting science from high over the Sun.

@Helvica_Ring_Scientist You can use Sepratrons to push boosters away after separation, if that's what you mean. There's also a fuel tank in Making History which has a small solid-fuel separation thruster built in.

@KerbalKiller2000 This is a known bug. It should be fixed in the next patch, probably 1.10.1.

@KerbolExplorer If you're entering Eve's atmosphere at nearly 5km/s, the inflatable heatshield just isn't gonna cut it, because it doesn't have ablator. This means it doesn't have thermal conductivity as low as the ablative heat shields, so it's transferring heat to the decoupler behind it (as @overkill13 said) and causing it to overheat.
For a probe of that size a 2.5m ablative heatshield will probably be large enough, anyway. Try using that

Welcome to the forums, @Badb3nd3r!!
So you need to test the Kodiak splashed down, right? You're splashed down, so everything is OK in that regard.
The problem is that you don't actually have a Kodiak onboard. The small orange ones are 'Twitch' engines, and the large two-nozzled one on the back is a Bobcat.
