Peridoot's smol plane challange!
DRAG0Nmon replied to peridoot's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
but then its not an aircraft, its just a very strange rocket... -
Planes may be cool. Rockets may be cooler. But both are overshadowed by the undisputable best method of travel: cars! In this challenge you must create a car and then put it through a series of tests and challenges to determine if yours is the best. There are a few different tests that you can pick and choose from, and some standards that your car must meet. Your car must have at lest one kerbal in either a command pod or an external command seat Your car must be powered by wheels and nothing else (no jets, rockets, etc.) Your car must complete whichever test you put it through without losing any parts or sustaining any damage. The large rover wheel exploit (where slightly turning left and right allow it to go super fast) is sadly not allowed. Part mods and physics mods are not allowed, along with any cheating or exploits not in the nature of the challenge. DLCs are allowed, along with information and visual mods. **One trial per car: each car is only allowed to have one entry per test. It can be updated if you manage to get it done faster with the same car, but the same car cannot have both the #1 and #2 spot. **The UI should be visible in each screenshot, unless it is for the aesthetics test. Include some basic facts about your car when you submit it, like its number of wheels, what powers it, etc. Test 1: Acceleration Usually, acceleration is measured in the time it takes to go from 0- 60 miles per hour. Because wheels in ksp are pretty slow, and measurement's aren't done in mph, your car's acceleration will be measured in the time it takes from first pressing "w" to the moment your car reaches 20.0 m/s Once your car spawns on the KSC Runway, toggle the brakes. The timer is started the moment the car starts moving forward and is stopped the moment it reaches the speed of 20 m/s Submission rules: Include screenshots of your car the moment the timer starts, some time during its run, and the moment it reaches 20 m/s. Or, include a video of the test run. Test 2: Speed A measure of the top speed of your car. The top speed must be reached before the car reaches the end of the KSC Runway. Once your car spawns on the KSC Runway, toggle the brakes. Start accelerating. The highest speed achieved before the end of the runway is reached is the speed recorded. Submission rules. Include a screenshot of your car the moment it starts moving forward, and the car traveling at it's top speed (or at the end of the runway). Test 3: Aesthetics This test doesn't really have a set of rules. It's solely decided on the looks of the car (how much it resembles a real life car). Submission rules: Include a screenshot of your car in any location you like or a short gif or video of your car. Test 4: Drag Race A common measurement of any car. Usually consists of a race in a straight line from a starting point to an agreed upon finish line. In this case, it's the shortest time between the car's spawn point on the KSC Runway to the exact end of the runway. Once your car spawn on the KSC Runway, immediately toggle the brakes. The timer is started the moment the car starts moving forward and is stopped the moment the front wheels cross the end line as shown in the picture. Submission rules: Include screenshots of your car the moment the timer starts, two times during its run, and the moment it reaches the finish line, with a screenshot of the f3 menu right after the timer is stopped. Or, include a video of it's run. Test 5: Lap Time The more official form of testing a car, laps are done all the time by all sorts of car manufacturers. In this test, your car must complete the lap shown below in the shortest amount of time, to test both handling and speed. Once your car spawn on the KSC Runway, drive it to the starting line and brake. Your car should be on the left side of the double lines (the same side as Mission Control) and your front wheels should be on the starting line, as shown in the screenshot below: The timer starts the moment you start driving forward. You will then drive in front of mission control, between the crawlway and the VAB, and around the rest of the track marked by the red line in the screenshot below. You must try your best to stay on the paved roads during the whole lap. If your car rolls and lands on its wheels, and no parts have been broken, you may continue the lap, but it is not likely worth it. The timer will stop once your car's front wheels cross the line on the side of the double lines opposite you started from. Submission rules: Include a screenshot of you car the moment it begins moving forward, and the moment its front wheels cross the finish line. Include screenshots of your car at every yellow dot marked in the screenshot above, as well as a screenshot of the f3 menu right after the timer stops. Or, include a video of your lap. Badges are being worked on and should be done fairly soon if people are interested. Depending on how many people are interested, I'll post a deadline sometime in the future so winners can eventually be announced. Happy racing!

Peridoot's smol plane challange!
DRAG0Nmon replied to peridoot's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
@peridoot I have EVE, Scatterer, and KER installed for visuals and information. The chair is sitting on 3 rotated and offset stock fuel cells, which provide 4.5 electric charge for the propellers, which consume 3.2 electric charge. The craft is entirely stock, as said in the vid's description. -

DRAG0Nmon replied to peridoot's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
All you kids with your new-fangled "SRBs" and your fancy "jet engines ", back in my day we had to use propellers if we wanted to fly! 5,370 funds, 799kg with Pables Kerman on board and 705kg without her. 6.804 cubic meters (dimensions are shown in the video) and made with 22 of the finest parts. Its rather large compared to the other planes here, but its also powered by eight pieces of metal spinning at 460 RPM. I'm also positive that I can make it smaller, so now i have something to do over the weekend. -

Is the plane allowed to take slight damage upon landing? -
Just a poll as the result of a disagreement on Discord ***Note- This is not about what it is called Canonically in-game, this is about what YOU call it on a daily basis***

@camacju Yes, that is correct. Great job cutting costs for the KSC, Gene will be happy! -
The Cheapest Science Challenge
DRAG0Nmon replied to DRAG0Nmon's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
@ralanboyle yes, you are allowed to give yourself max-tech, facility, and progression so you can build restriction-free. -
The KSC is broke! Nobody knows how accounting made such an avoidable mistake, but somehow, spending has gone out of control and the Kerbals are in deep financial trouble. With investors pulling out, manufacturers cutting supply, and the constant pressure of continuous scientific advancement, the KSC will need a grand mission and an affordable price. The challenge- Launch a crewed mission to at least LKO, or another celestial body, in science or career mode, and gather science for as low of a price as you can. The rules- No alt+f12, HyperEdit, MechJeb autopilot (though MechJeb for information is okay), no part mods or physic-altering mods. You may not mine and process ore for fuel, and then recover that fuel for extra profit. Any fuel mined must be used. Visual and informative mods are always welcome. You are allowed to Start a new science/career save, and give yourself Max-Facility or Max-Progression or Max-Tech Tree, so you have access to all parts and unrestricted building limits. All science must be recovered. Scoring- The equation for scoring is P=(V-R)/S, where V= the price in the VAB or SPH, R=the recovered price, S= the science gathered, and P=your score, in funds per science. For example, if my rocket costs 80,000 funds in the VAB and I recover 20,000 funds and 100 science, I do P=(80,000-20,000)/100, and get P=600 funds per science, or a score of 600. Video/Pics of important parts of your mission is a requirement. You must also include a shot or picture of your craft in the VAB, and of your recovered science and funds upon landing and craft recovery. My run with a scientific version of my SSTO “Burnley” got me: (76799 - 73655) / 177 = 17.76 funds per science. Leaderboard: 1- @camacju= 0.04 funds / science 2- @DRAG0Nmon= 17.76 funds / science

I have a plane that can technically take off and maintain flight at ~30m/s, but its cruising speed is like 110m/s, so which counts, its cruising speed to its lowest possible speed to climb in altitude?

Perseverance Rover Replica Challenge!
DRAG0Nmon replied to DRAG0Nmon's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
@catloaf I updated the rules so it isn't a requirement to resemble Perseverance @MrThomnnus Excellent job! I like the use of a piston for the cables. -
Perseverance Rover Replica Challenge!
DRAG0Nmon replied to DRAG0Nmon's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
@doggonemess The point is to try to create a stock replica of the rover, but since I allowed RSS, i figured I should just add Realism Overhaul since all those parts are designed and sized for RSS. That does look good though! -
Perseverance Rover Replica Challenge!
DRAG0Nmon replied to DRAG0Nmon's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
No takers, huh? -
With a historical launch this year of the Mars Perseverance Rover and the Ingenuity helicopter drone, space nerds have a lot to be excited for. To celebrate this momentous occasion, I'd like to see people's take on replicating this marvel of engineering in KSP. So the challenge is, Replicate the Mars 2020 Rover mission. Rules: No cheating with debug menu or HyperEdit or anything related. DLC is fine, as is MechJeb (for info only), information mods, visual mods and TweakScale. I'll also be allowing Realism Overhaul as well RSS (Real Solar System) for those who want the added challenge of dealing with more Delta V requirements. No other part mods unless part of realism overhaul, and no other physics-altering mods other than RSS allowed. How to win: Create a Duna rover (or Mars rover with RSS) preferably resembling Perseverance, and a drone helicopter resembling Ingenuity (optional). Launch it on a rocket, preferably resembling an Atlas V, and land it on Duna (or Mars for RSS). OPTIONAL: Then, take your helicopter drone for a short flight and land it back on the red surface. Include a video of the mission or pictures of important parts of the mission. Cant wait to see what you all come up with! Also, if anyone wants to make a badge for this, I'll happily give them credit, as I am not much of an artist. Good Luck!
