Yes, people are conditioned from a young age as to how they think of the date, and though day/month/ year is the more logical progression, you have to except that people will find it hard to change from what they are taught. Remember they have to live in a country where the majority all write it that way.
I like to think of the "/" as representing "OF The". If people think that way then maybe they may adopt the way on D/M/Y over time.
