Yesterday I realized something. We are all complete KSP2 n00bs. It doesn’t matter how many hours we might have in KSP 1 (thousands in my case) - we are all still newbs. KSP2 may look a bit like KSP1, but the engine and physics are different, the parts don’t perform identically, the game seems a little less forgiving, and the UI is different, buggy, and under development. So what I did in KSP2 yesterday was start over from the beginning, coming at the game like it was 1955 and I was Kergei Korolev. I quite literally tried to approach the game like I was playing for the first time, starting with simple unmanned sounding rockets, testing how the parts work, trying to relearn the systems, varying flight profiles, progressing designs incrementally, and slowly and carefully pushing the envelope. It’s validated my thinking that simple and conservative design and flying is critical. Any overcomplicated craft is a Kraken lure at the moment. But despite encountering the Kraken with a piloted Agena docking target-alike, and really not liking the visual aspect of the brew maneuver plan system and lack of post-SOI-change orbit track, I had a pretty good time and got better at the game. Tonight is going to be a Zonk/Muna themed affair.

It’s way too easy to get fussed by the hysteria on the Discord. Intercept isn’t a large team, TT’s sunk costs will have been relatively minor compared to a big flagship project, and it’s clear they intend this to be a long term revenue generator with spin-offs and perhaps other media (look at the EA cinematic and tell me that nobody at TT is thinking movie or animated series) that’s going to have a longer life as a revenue generator than your average shooter. Everyone should just relax. A bunch of children pitching tantrums on the discord is not going to have any significant impact on TT’s plans.

It’s nothing that we haven’t seen back in the janky old days before autostrutting in KSP1. Conservatively designed craft with reasonably placed strutting fly just fine. -
I’m getting playable framerates from an [email protected]/1050ti 6MB. To be clear, by playable I mean comparable to KSP1 EA: single digit framerates near KSC, north of 20 in space. Craft are buildable, controllable, and everything works. I think that at least some of the moaning is from people who didn’t lean good design and flying practices the hard way in KSP1, and I think the minimum specs were pretty conservative. The devs haven’t really begun to optimize the game. We don’t know what might be possible on that front, but the minimum specs might come down in future.

We’re on the second day of EA and the devs still haven’t fixed this? The horror… the horror…

Disagree. EA is the time for providing feedback like “I am getting [framerate] fps in [situation] with a [details on CPU/GPU]” or “I encountered [bug] that did [thing] in [situation]”. We all of course have the right to express ourselves: why not do so like non-toxic adults?

Today I landed Val on Jool. Jool has a surface now. You can walk around on it.

Built a river and drove around KSC, did a series of progressively larger 1.25m builds culminating in re-enacting my first Mün landing, and built a MiG-21-alike and went flying. The driving and flying experience is vastly superior to KSP1, incidentally. Today I think I’ll take Val skydiving on Jool.

“If you have a crappy PC, don’t buy the game!” -Scott Manley. I’m running a 2017(?) [email protected] ghz, 1050ti with 6MB, game installed off C. All KSP 2 graphics settings are low. It does 30-60 fps in KSP1, so expecting the same from an EA version of KSP2 would be unrealistic. I’m perfectly aware of the history of the game; I’ve been following it closely since it was announced. So I understand the situation as well as most non-Intercept employees. If you read the roadmap and spec slides and the reports coming out of the ESA event, the state of EA should not have come as a surprise. The choice of how to deal with this reality should not be as hard as it seems for some people. In my case, reality is that the game is quite playable on a machine I bought in 2017. I have 5,300 hours since 2013 in KSP1: the reality is that KSP2 is far more feature complete than KSP1 was in EA, and much better looking. So I’ll enjoy it on my crappy old laptop until its replacement arrives (on Tuesday - “if you have a crappy PC and still want to play the game, your options are either sucking it up, upgrading or buying a new PC” - me). Here’s the thing: EA is not an excuse - it is reality. We have the EA version of the game that we got, and it not only aligns with what we were told we were getting in terms of the EA, it exceeds realistic expectations based on that information. And, as you point out, TT is a big studio with deep pockets, and plans for the franchise. I’m optimistic for the future. And in the worstcase, so what if the game fails? In no particular order, the Steam forums are the sort of place that they are, and $50 is really not a lot of money. KSP is not an expensive hobby -probably somewhere around $1/hr for me even if I factor in the entire cost of both laptops I’ve played it on and the second license I got for my nephew. -

See, one of the secrets to happiness is being able to deal with the reality you’ve got… The game is better than those of us with realistic expectations of Early Access expected, then. -
I’ve got the game on a different drive, and the game has been low bug count/framerate still playable with a 1050ti.

Well, it’s perfectly playable if you don’t look at Kerbin :). Thing is, I wasn’t expecting the game to even run on my machine, and I was worried about frame rates 1/6th of what I’m getting, no angst. -

5 year old Dell Gaming laptop, [email protected]/1050ti 6mb. 1920x1080, all graphics settings at low. I’m getting acceptably playable fps compared to KSP1 standards (6 to 39 FPS in flight depending on where the camera is pointing. I’ve seen a couple of bugs and glitches, nothing that has broken my game. People need to chill. The game is better than we expected and will be fine. -

I’ll stop pointing out that the game is in EA when people stop having hilarious fits of overblown histrionics over every little bug. It’s been far more playable than I expected on my 2017 gaming laptop, and is a far better EA experience than KSP1. The EA fine. 1.0 will be fantastic. Everybody needs to chill. -
Kerbal could not EVA from Grumble Seat due to obstacle - no obstacles present. Dell Inspiron I5 7000 Gaming (late 2017): i7-700HQ 2.80 ghz/GTX 1050 ti 6mb Rovemate+ Grumble Seat, 2xZ400, 1x PB-Nuk, 4x Rovemax M1 FPS are surprisingly good, better than I’d dared hope. Am confident that this machine will be viable after optimization. 70+ in main menu, 13 in intro vid and KSC, 31 FPS in VAB and Map, 14-15 driving on runway, around KSC.

I think the mantra should run “stay off the discord, report the bugs, provide the feedback, enjoy the process”. As someone who doesn’t identify as a gamer (KSP is basically all I play) I gotta say that the utterly toxic whinging I’ve seen since the specs dropped has almost made me despair for humanity. Is this typical? -
Still at 43% - I am in a remote area, but bears in back yard > super fast downloads IMHO. Gonna be running this on a i7/1050ti from 2017 until the new machine arrives Tuesday. Don’t wish me luck, wish me patience :).

Well said, OP. Ignore the whinging and doomsaying, enjoy the game and the EA process, and fly safe. I really can’t imagine why people seem to feel entitled to [any of the things people have been banging on about]. We’ve going to get the game we’re going to get in twenty hours, we know why it’s in the state it’s in, where EA is going, and how it’s going to get there. None of the issues people are getting so toxic about matter, or have any impact on their lives (unless they’re incredibly fragile, but that’s not my problem). Let’s all chill, and enjoy hunting bugs and pushing the envelope.

I think there is a very minor issue with some over dramatic toxic gamers having meltdowns inside certain online echo chambers. From my perspective, it’s understandable that development took longer than planned, the state of the game is acceptable for EA purposes, the specs are understandable given EA and the unprecedented physics modelling involved, optimization probably won’t take that long, fifty bucks is reasonable for the game in its current state, and I’m looking forward to helping it reach it’s promised potential.
