I go for a standard 2-strut rule. Each strap is taped to the main booster by 2 struts, and each component of the core booster and the payload is connected by two struts on the component above/below it. For extra-tall rockets, I'm going for steel girder method.

Using mods are NOT cheating, and nobody should tell you that using one does. Except for Challenges, where you'll have to conform with the parameters set by the poster of a challenge you are taking. No one should dictate you what or what not to use, and everything would merely serve as a guide. YOU CANNOT CHEAT IN A SINGLE PLAYER GAME, NO MATTER WHAT YOU'LL DO. YOU ARE IN CHARGE ON EVERYTHING, AND YOU CAN DO EVERYTHING WHAT YOU WANT. Don't get me preaching around here.

I have 4GB RAM, and I don't want to let my part count creep past 300. Otherwise it would be a slideshow. So I find it more like a "Hey, my rig can do this! How about yours?" challenge. Kudos for attempting it yourself before posting though
