  2. Logitech makes wonderful hardware, and their customer support in case things break is very nice too. My full desktop is all Logitech gear I bought. Squeezebox for speakers, keyboard, mouse, and joystick/gamepad. They cost a bit more, but I think they\'re usually worth it. (cue people finding and posting every single failed Logitech product ever )
  3. Squad is not EA. They cannot just 'assign someone' to examine complex physics problems without taking someone off developing the game itself. Attempting to make N-body work the way they want would require taking time away from the development of the game. Secondly, you are assuming that Squad has not already looked at the N-body problem. I assure you, HarvesteR is well aware of the N-body problems, its potential solutions, it\'s pro\'s and it\'s cons. We have this discussion once a month or so. Squad tried, and they decided that patched conics would work better for what they wanted to do with the game. I love discussion about the N-body problem, but please don\'t say Squad hasn\'t tried or needs to put more people on it. Cheers 8)
  4. I\'d argue that patched conics ARE an approximation. Keep in mind we don\'t eve have patched conics yet. we just have conics, which is why orbits look so screwy when changing SOI. The last discussion we had about it, someone showed graphs of a 3-body solution vs patched conics and they were 99% the same or so.
  5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-body_problem If you can accurately solve the N-Body problem for over 2 bodies you\'d win yourself a Nobel prize.
  6. oh i do so love a rusty machine. I cant help but wonder what it would look like if the focus was centered on that walkway in the back.
  7. I want this to be a thread for people to talk photography and show their work. Makes me duty bound to post first Some more of my photos, ones I\'m more proud of. Spoilered for bandwidth considerations
  8. The difference between a good photographer and a great one is leaving out all your bad photos. This was the only half decent shot today. Everything else was worse LOL
  9. There was a time when I had a job that allowed me to save up enough for a piece of L glass once or twice a year. I made sacrifices though. My 70-200L for example, is not stabilized. I took a photo today! (spoilered for bandwidth safety) http://www.flickr.com/photos/socket7/7009369575/#in/photostream
  10. Autofocus can get in the way sometimes. It\'s handy to focus quickly, but when you\'re trying to set a depth of field, it just ruins your hard work the moment you press the shutter. I don\'t know how many times I\'ve setup a macro shot just the way i want, press the button and the thing refocuses. *headdesk*
  11. The SXi should be pretty cheap these days. It\'s a very old model. You might be able to pick one up used. (Make sure a camera shop checks it out first before buying! Or yourself if you know what you\'re looking for, things like dusty sensors, lens scratches, partial to non functioning shutters/mirrors. L Quality glass is stupidly expensive (worth it though) and only useful for very specific work (Macro lenses, super zoom). Some of my best works have been taken through my cheap kit zoom lens, or my $50 nifty 50mm, which gives incredible quality for the price (comes from having so few lens elements) and gives you a nice artsy fartsy look. If you can save up enough to pick up a full frame sensor on your DSLR, that\'s awesome. my SXi has an APS-C cropped sensor though, and I\'m more then happy with it. One of these days I want to try astro photography, but I don\'t think my tripod is stable enough.
  12. So. I take photos! Does anyone else? I use a Canon SXi, a kit lens, along with a 70-200L, a 100mm macro, and a nifty fifty. My Flicker photostream is http://www.flickr.com/photos/socket7/ and an album of my personal favorites is here http://www.flickr.com/photos/socket7/sets/72157623717228114/ Comments and criticism are always welcome about my photos, and so is bragging about your own gear and posting your own photos!
  13. My very first orbits were polar ones because i had to make sure my bottom stage wouldn\'t hit the tower and explode. Since the mun and some design changes, I always launch with a heading of 90 degrees and a pitch of 89 Polar orbits seem a waste of time to me, but maybe I\'ll put a satellite or two in a polar orbit anyways just for giggles.
  14. Copyrighted material constitutes stuff you aren\'t supposed to torrent. Music, Movies, Games etc. Freeware minecraft mods are perfectly fine to torrent. I think we all know what shouldn\'t be torrented, and I don\'t wish to encourage debate on the subject. This isn\'t the place for a bittorrent debate, so lets leave that minefield alone and we\'ll all be happier for it. ;D I hope you get your Minecraft server up and running. I\'m afraid of starting with that game, lest I get sucked into it and die of starvation while playing it. I don\'t need 'died from playing minecraft for 72 hours straight' on my tombstone.
  15. News.google.com has everything you need, just search it. Finding a reputable primary source might be hard though. We can save discussion of the subject for another place. I just worry a bit for the kids parents when he says he wants to 'Run a server'. =P Though, he probably wants to run a minecraft server the more I think about it, which would be completely harmless.
  16. Sounds like a youtube problem, not a FiOS problem, FiOS residential service does not have set bandwidth caps. That said, if you pull down enough data over the connection, eventually they will ask 'whats going on here' and you might have to ask some uncomfortable questions (especially if you\'re doing something like torrenting things you shouldn\'t be). They are most concerned about businesses using residential services for corporate use, but all major US ISP\'s will be cracking down on file sharing too in the next month or so be warned. Whatever server you setup, I would recommend limiting it\'s access to your bandwidth. This will not only keep your parents from noticing your server because the internet is running slow for them (the server is using all the bandwidth), It will keep Verizon from bothering you as well (Unless you\'re pirating stuff).
  17. Make lots of good posts and make a good impression the mods, and they will consider adopting you into their family no matter what OS you are using. It is a thankless job however and you will probably regret it.
  18. Shiny! What are your processor temps on the stock cooler? What are you using to read them?
  19. Putting images behind spoiler tags also makes it a lot easy for people to browse the forum on a mobile device. Those little screens don\'t take 1600x1200 desktop backgrounds too well. It\'s not about hiding the images, it\'s about keeping the thread accessible to the most number of bronies on a diverse amount of hardware
  20. :-\ Never use more then one antivirus at a time. It\'s a waste of system resources, and they can cause problems with each other. I use Avast, Adblockplus, noscript, ghostery, flash block and peer blocker. I have to try really hard to encounter a virus these days. Noscript, flashblock and peer blocker shoots down 99%, and ghostery nails the other 1% of viruses as well as all the creepy herbert the pervert run ad metric trackers that are watching my every step on the internet. (Looking at you GOOGLE! You don\'t need my porn habits and you wont get them. > ) The whole setup can get a bit daunting at times to be honest, sometimes websites won\'t work. I take this as a sign the website was garbage anyways, and the content within worthless, or I have to tweak whitelists. EDIT: If you\'ve already got a virus. I recommend a bottle of hard liquor and a shot glass. Fill shot glass, drink. Repeat until forehead hits floor. Call someone else to clean up the vomit and the computer the next day. (IE:I no longer clean malware. If someone insists I do I will wipe all their data without backing it up.)
  21. Keeping the oil free of conductive debris is prohibitively difficult. Also the oil is expensive and you need like 25-30 gallons. Furthermore, you\'re just increasing the thermal mass. You\'d still need a pump and radiator system to dissipate the heat or you\'d slowly turn your computer into a deep fryer. EDIT: Computers are also heavy enough as is and electromechanical components like rubber belt drives and motors don\'t always like extra lube. (can you imagine a 120mm fan trying to pump water? : )
  22. The water cooler could be money better spent elsewhere. A stock i5 cooler should keep everything in check, just watch out for the crappy attachment pins (make sure they\'re really pushed ALL the way into their spot on the mobo.) My i7 might need that cooler, though I think it just needs a proper thermal paste application and a good way to clamp it down on the cooler. ANYWAYS. Save your money for a better video card. Whatever happened to the days where you needed to use a screwdriver to pry the spring bar off the top of the heatsink to remove it. Never worried about poor contact with those suckers.
  23. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO TALK ABOUT PONIES BUT ONLY IN THE OFF TOPIC FORUM! ALSO! SHUT UP ABOUT PONIES! ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
  24. Pretty self explanatory really. I\'m building a new computer and have finally picked a budget and a bunch of parts. I\'m pretty sure it\'s a fine build, but it\'s been 3 years since I built my own machine, so I figure I\'d post a screenshot of my shopping list in case someone sees something I\'ve omitted or is a bad idea. And everyone else can do the same! Lets combine our knowledge like Voltron and give people computer build advice in this thread!
