NASA Asteroid Mission Pack.
vger replied to Deathsoul097's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The game doesn't support geomodding, so no. Gosh, imagine if it did though, and all impacts made craters. The land around the KSP would look like a warzone. -
Whats the point of using the mobile processing lab?
vger replied to Ohls's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yeah I know, I just can't biome-hop in a right frame of mind. Somehow it just always feels like metagaming, even though there's no logical reason for that. Sometimes I just want to do it the way the astronauts do. It's one of the things that probably 'should' be taken care of in gameplay balance though. There have already been enough gripes about manned landings being practically pointless except for soil samples. It's even worse for rovers. -
Drag racing probably wouldn't be as cool as you think. Rovers have a top speed at around 24m/s, which was achievable in the straightaways on these courses. And without a more accurate mission clock, the split times would be so minute that there would probably be a LOT of apparent equal times. Rocket-powered drag-racers maybe though? I could see that being fun, mostly because of the potential for lots of explosions.

Women Kerbal Astronauts
vger replied to edallison655321's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
How do we know we're not already seeing them? Maybe we just can't tell. But I met the male Kerbals can... -
Based on the initial post, I wouldn't see why we couldn't. Nothing about AviationLights gives an 'unfair advantage.' Unless looking cooler than all the other cars factors into the score. When money and road laws aren't an issue in a virtual world... ALWAYS trick out your ride. Time: 1:50. I too was wondering about possible lag issues. I can't imagine what other drivers are doing that I'm not and could actually shave off a whole 15 seconds from the time. I tried a LOT of different configurations. With or without spoilers. With only the front. With only the back. RCS tank in the center. Thrusters in front. Thrusters in back. Straight wheels, cambered wheels. Differing chassis. None of it made a difference of more than 2 seconds at best.

OK, I hope this is legal...

You know, the first time I found the monolith near the KSP, I thought it was a memorial that had automatically been erected someplace where I had crashed a manned rocket. -
comets & unmanned EVA actions
vger replied to JtPB's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
If you tried to make those 100km long though they'd probably look atrocious. -
I wonder if 'lights' are even necessary for such a thing. If I was looking for a low-power solution for emergency illumination, I think I'd go for phosphor paint. "Glow-in-the-dark" strips. They used to use these on aircraft and in public buildings to highlight the walkways back before LED's were a thing. This would be VERY easily to implement compared to new light sources. The kind of tiny point lights you're describing would be so small that you probably wouldn't even be able to see them. I agree with Red Iron Crown though. Get Aviation Lights. It's a great mod and it makes vessels look awesome on the dark side of a world.

comets & unmanned EVA actions
vger replied to JtPB's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Relax, we're getting asteroids soon. Then we can talk about comets. Though I don't know what kind of a graphical nightmare that logically could/should be. For a long time I've wondered what the tail of a comet would look like up close. Would it still just be a blurry haze like in photos? Or would there be tons of rocks and ice flying around like in Armageddon? The latter would be a rendering nightmare. -
Whats the point of using the mobile processing lab?
vger replied to Ohls's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yeah that was the plan. Unfortunately I didn't account for needing a docking procedure. I thought taking the test results out of the equipment in an EVA and then dropping them in the lab would be sufficient. Oops. Though I guess logically that method 'should' work. Ah well. Back to the drawing board. -
I LOL'd at the failed attempts to destroy Jool. This is exactly why the Death Star didn't just try to cut through Yavin to get to the moon with the base on it.

Whats the point of using the mobile processing lab?
vger replied to Ohls's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Hrmm... so I'm going to take a wild guess that I didn't fully understand how the MPL worked when I set up my current mission. I have a remote lander with JUST this as a payload sitting on the Mun. I sent it ahead of a manned mission, with the intention of two Kerbals manning it, while a third collects data via a rover and then brings it back to the lab for analysis. ... I guess this won't actually work? -

In the Kerbal world though would it really be a flag, or a pair of soiled undies (to commemorate what happened in the command module just before the catastrophic failure)? Sadly now I'm just hypothesizing what a proper Kerbal death ceremony would actually be like. Given the nature of the typical space program, I think they have a complex theology. The highest level of Heaven (which involves an infinite supply of snacks) is reserved for those who are strapped to a few tons of fuel just before dying in an epic explosion. -
A reason to have a base
vger replied to Superturtle's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
This is one of those things that would make weather and seasons more than just superficial eye-candy. Having to wait a certain amount of time to record something. Perhaps even chasing after a dust storm, or dare I say, a tornado? Waiting for a volcanic eruption? Events on some worlds should be dynamic, meaning that if you want to take readings, you can't just do the stereotypical 'hop and go home' strategy, but would actually have to land and spend some time planning it out. -
Rovers not running quite straight.
vger replied to MarvinKitFox's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I ran into this issue as well but I don't believe it is a problem with the design (some of the time anyhow). When I was tweaking a car for the F1 challenge, I found that sometimes it would drive straight, and other times it wouldn't. Something about the initial 'drop' at the launchpad seems to influence it, and it's more or less the luck of the draw whether the car winds up perfect. Sometimes I noticed even the spoiler would be crooked (blatantly so) and other times it would be straight. The only way to fix it was by reverting to launch a few times until it worked. -

Are you sure that Kerbals all more or less being 'the same' isn't part of the race's "charm?" -
Heat distortion effects.
vger replied to mcbmaestro's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
There's a LOT that could still be done in the FX department to further enhance the feel and personality of each world. Dust storms, lightning, volumetric fog & clouds, volcanoes (either magmatic or cryo), sulfur rain, etc. Just going by our own solar system, even 'dead' planets without an ecosystem are often ANYTHING but static. There's shader fun to be had with things like luminescence and light refraction, "pearlized" surfaces, frost... the possibilities are endless. And a personal wish, I'd love to see Minmus get a specular shader which causes those little points of light to interact with sunlight properly. Something sparkly, like how fresh snow looks when light hits it. -

Another thing about PC's, if you know what you're doing, you can have a PC that will last longer than a console. Not referring to breaking, but simply the rate at which consoles are being rendered obsolete these days. My current PC is nearly 7 years old now. I built it for gaming and the only thing I've had to do in all that time is replace a fried GPU. I'm still perfectly happy with it and still see no need to replace it. -
Aye, and it'd be much more interesting if we could get things to NOT float, but also not vanish when they sink, and then we could start building submersibles.

The biome hunt already feels like grinding to me, at least to a degree. I try very hard to 'just explore' what fancies me at the time so I don't feel like I'm driving myself crazy to squeeze a couple extra science out of the Mun to get a new piece of the tech tree. But even without expanding the planets, even little things with the science we already have could be given a little extra. Metagames, if you will. For example, you have the goo. Granted, it's a pretty silly concept, but at the same time, I am always looking forward to what interesting new thing it's going to do. Imagine if probes only gave rudimentary readings about it, but while examining it on an EVA, you get a new window that enables you to actually poke, prod, zap, etc the goo to see the reactions. Visually too, not just text info. In some cases this could border on puzzles which only unlock the science, after you've gotten the kind of reaction you were looking for. A bit more on planetary exploration, our own solar system is full of cool examples that could be deemed 'worthy of deeper investigation.' There's water on the moon, the van allen belts of gas giants, the great red spot on Jupiter (okay, we couldn't land there, but we could drop a probe into it), the (hypothetical) ocean beneath the icy surface of Europa that may harbor microbial life. The search for life could be a metagame unto itself really. Doesn't mean new models need to be created so one of the worlds can be populated with large complex lifeforms, but just looking for something really basic, whether it be alive or fossilized, would be pretty cool. And then there's the anomalies, which while fun little Easter Eggs could accomplish so much more. For one example, granted I'm not suggesting this actually be done, because it's too much of a 2001 ripoff... what if the monolith actually did something? For starters, bury it, so you can't see it by flying around. It emits radio waves though, meaning if you establish a network of satellites, you can then triangulate its position. Flying a probe to it wont work though because at close proximity the radio waves interrupt all communication, resulting an uncontrollable probe. But a manned mission would work, and then reaching the site and uncovering it leads to some other cool stuff, and yadda yadda yadda.
