About a year ago, I took my laptop in for a good cleaning and heatsink reseating. When I got it back, the screen backlight didn't work. When I took it back, they said a hair got stuck in the connector. Ah well, stuff happens... This year, my daughter took her laptop in because the fan was making a horrendous noise. The fan needed replacing, and it took forever (3 weeks at least?) for the part to arrive. They gave it back to her while waiting, but she didn't use it because of the noise. Finally got the part, put it in, yadda yadda, finally got it home today and the wifi didn't work. With this silly HP laptop, there is no access panel for user-replaceable parts (like on my HP), or I would have had a look inside. Instead the whole thing needs to be pried apart. So back it went to the shop, and they fixed it on the spot, saying the antenna wire had come off (which fit the symptoms; it could see a couple of networks very weakly before it lost them again). I can understand how it can be hard to make sure everything stays together while getting the halves back together, but one would think they'd test things before calling the customer saying it's ready.. I don't think I'll go back there... But I have to wonder if my fan is spinning as fast as it should. It's quiet, but I don't think it's blowing as hard as it used to. But I don't want to spend $80 on a fan... So can anyone suggest a good, free hardware monitor (temp and fan speed) program? So many out there to choose from...

A local radio station, Jack-FM, has been having fun with that game for the punny/surreal little blurbs they sprinkle between songs throughout the day. The one that tickled my funnybone most: ”We were planning to take a nap after the game, but we ended up taking one during it”

Connector and fuel tank connecting
StrandedonEarth replied to Silviu250's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
There is a way, but it doesn’t actually connect on the editor. After mounting a tank to a radial decoupled and attaching another tank below (preferable to above), you can mount docking ports to the core and radial tanks so they are almost touching (use the translation gizmo). When the vehicle loads on the pad, the ports will click together making a pretty solid connection. Make sure to enable staging (probably need to enable advanced tweakables for that) on the ports for a quick separation! i can post pics later if needed when I’m not on mobile. -
But it would have the capacity for a full-on escape pod, complete with heat shield and de-orbit capability. The biggest problem would be making it too top-heavy, especially if trying to pack enough propellants for a cis-lunar return. It all depends on the architecture of the system. But it’s nigh impossible to plan for every contingency in a reasonable fashion.

Why is the engine plate a decoupler?

5m parts and engine plates, my favorites! Being able to stuff 9 Vectors under a tank makes for one mother of a heavy lifter. -
Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
StrandedonEarth replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
The one I really had to laugh at was a front-page headline claiming a human skeleton was found on the moon. This was long ago, probably in the 80's (long before photoshop had even been dreamed of), and the hatchmarks where the skeleton picture was literally cut and pasted into a munscape moonscape was so obvious a blind person would notice it. -
totm march 2020 So what song is stuck in your head today?

Whenever someone says remix this pops into my head.... -
What have you been playing recently? (Other than KSP)

Just bought the Industries Plus DLC for Cities: Skylines and am building that up. Got a furniture factory and bakery up, and am starting to develop an oilpatch -
Random Science Facts Thread!

Nope, they allowed the AI's god-like control -
Ya know, that’s probably the most logical explanation, if a bit of a letdown to non-console players

One could wonder why it took so long after Apollo 13, but it's probably the upcoming 50th anniversary that got Hollywood interested in this stuff again. Other considerations would be that much of the population isn't old enough to remember the landings (I was 2yo during the last landing), and that China is showing interest in a Moon base.

Science, medicine, and quackery
StrandedonEarth replied to sevenperforce's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Well, it did say "quarrel." It all depends on what the athlete was trained for. A runner would just try to run away and probably win in a sprint, but I bet a paleolithic hunter could run several marathons a day. A boxer might have trouble against those thick skulls. But a commando trained in 100 ways of killing with bare hands would wipe the tundra with an ancient hunter. -
And sometimes KYS? What about KEES and KOOS? Do kerbals eat kouskous? What would KES and KUS stand for anyways? Kerbal Engineering Systems and Kerbal Underwater Systems? Oh wait, kuss is what Jeb does when his rocket explodes....

Like building a grain silo? -
Since it seems a new thread pops up every time a celebrity dies, I thought maybe a thread should be dedicated to their memory. Hopefully this thread will become the place to report news of celebrity deaths, instead of RIP threads scattered all over. This thread was triggered by the recent loss of two Canadians who, while not well known, played major roles in Canadiana. First up is Emily Griffiths, who died last week at age 96. A philanthropist, she was instrumental in convincing her husband Frank to buy the Vancouver Canucks NHL team and keep them in the city. https://globalnews.ca/video/4914013/emily-griffiths-is-remembered-after-she-passes-away-at-the-age-of-96, A big deal to locals, this news probably meant little outside BC And on the news today, Ron Joyce, the co-founder of the iconic Tim Horton's coffee shop chain passed away Thursday at age 88. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/tim-hortons-ron-joyce-died-1.5001820. This could turn into a national day of mourning, since a double-double from Timmy's is as Canadian as apple pie is American. RIP to them both. Edit. I will try to keep the thread title updated with the name of the most recent loss(es).

totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I never had any expectation or idea about how big Raptors would be. It's the first time I saw one and it looked huge. The powerhead looks pretty long relative to the bell too, but that's probably because the combustion chamber is surrounded by plumbing, and it's not a vacuum bell. Then again, here's the powerhead of an SSME, also wrapped around the chamber. Although it may be easier/simpler to land in Africa or Spain. Just kidding I know that's way too far. Although Boca Chica to Florida may be more doable. Or a natural gas drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico, to refuel... -
Looks like New Glenn would make a nice-looking model rocket, although the bottom fins are probably a little small...

Musk on Musk - "I mistakenly thought i was smart"
StrandedonEarth replied to RedKraken's topic in Science & Spaceflight
A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, especially if you think you know it all *glares at my teenage son* And managers really need to listen to their engineers *coughChallengercough* -
I was reading the discussion about engine plates here, with part of the discussion focusing on the fact that it's not clearly explained how it's supposed to be used. So it occurred to me that instead of cluttering up the part descriptions with usage instructions, perhaps the part descriptions could have a link to a KSPedia page about that part group, e.g. engine plates, fairings, decouplers/separators, or any other parts where the usage is not completely straightforward (and some things that might seem simple may seem confusing to new players). Even with things like SRB's and heatshields, it could be useful to have the 'pro tip' available that they can be tweaked to reduce thrust, propellant load, or ablator (saves mass). explaining what the tweakables can do or help with.
