  1. Now I have an Adam Sandler song stuck in my head. Given the nature of his lyrics, it's strongly recommended that I not even post the name here.
  2. Wasn't that an old test? I would also think that If they decided to touch down on land, the SD's could be used to cushion the landing, much like how Soyuz uses solid rockets at touchdown
  3. It looks more like a motorcycle suit, really. As for the differences, well, that's the difference between mannequins/models compared to real people.
  4. That's attached to a big engine, right? Run the engine and the decoupler will heat up and explode. Problem solved. Explosive decoupling: it's the Kerbal way KIS/KAS works too. Don't leave home without a screwdriver. And never forget your towel
  5. I'm not sure how that will help me, and I stay away from reddit unless there's an interesting AMA. I may not have stated my question clearly enough. Given that this is a family-friendly forum, am I allowed to name a song (no link or anything) that have decidedly adult lyrics (as in foul language)? It's pretty funny, so I'd like to post it if allowed, but not if it'll just get removed or earn me a warning.
  6. Ok, so I have a song stuck in my head. I know there's a thread for that; I've posted there many times already. The problem is, it's an Adam Sandler song, so of course it's loaded with foul language. I know I can't post it or even link to it on this forum. Am I even allowed to name it, with a suitable warning?
  7. I read about explosive tank armour many years ago, using the end result: the explosive on top of the armour defocuses the cutting jet of the shaped charge on the incoming warhead. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactive_armour
  8. A rescue contract came up for a strandee in orbit of Eeloo. I absolutely had to rescue Rokin Kerman. He roks!
  9. There were also delays due to the two vehicles that underwent RUD events. Those stalled things for awhile as SpaceX engineers tried to figure out what happened and how to fix the problems.
  10. Maybe because of those, uh, things from Europa Report
  11. I was actually referring to plugging terrestrial volcanoes touched off by a cataclysmic impact. I guess I shouldn’t have started a new paragraph for that line.
  12. We've had a run of clear, dry, mild weather, which is unusual for January on the Wet Coast. But that's forecast to come to an end tomorrow, when...
  13. An extinction-level impact (bigger than the dinosaur killer) that could not be deflected could conceivably cause constant tectonic activity (volcanoes and earthquakes) for years or decades, never mind all the gunk thrown up in the air from the impact and ensuing firestorm. Potential major challenge: plugging all those volcanoes
  14. It was really just burning the lithium with fluorine. The hydrogen was added to boost the ISP to the neighborhood of ~550s, as the key to high ISP is light exhaust products (maximizing exhaust below) I second the recommendation to read Ignition!, as that’s where I learned about that engine. An interesting and informative read, although some of the chemistry can get a little dry
  15. That would get mighty cold, even with a drysuit. But I suppose if they use the pressurant gas to heat the suits....
  16. I was looking for a thread to post this, since it seems like a neat proof-of-concept, but I didn't see an appropriate looking thread in the first few pages of this sub-forum. So I thought I'd create a new thread for "New Stuff." So post the neat new gadgetry you find here! http://www.spacedaily.com/reports/Steam_powered_asteroid_hoppers_developed_through_UCF_collaboration_999.html
  17. Easier to post it here than look for the joke or funny image thread.... Oooops
  18. *sigh* On this morning's news they referred to these probes as being on the "dark side" of the moon. I just sent them a message telling them that they are currently in sunshine on the Far Side of the moon, and to get their terminology right.
  19. Never, unless you make an active vessel out of one on a collision course. Objects on rails cannot collide (no active physics), they just phase through each other
  20. Mt Cheam, Fraser Valley, BC Kitty loved sleeping under the Christmas tree. I think he misses it. He looks kinda peeved that I disturbed his nap...
  21. Error 1138: Dolby THX not loud enough
  22. Well, I would think the gas needs to be fairly hot to provide pressure, which would vaporize some oxygen, although probably not in the right proportions to detonate. (but hey, I'm only a washed-up failed engineering student, so I could easily be wrong. But then, NASA didn't see anything wrong with pressurizing a capsule with pure oxygen to an absolute pressure of ~19 psi either)
  23. Speaking of Gyro-jet, rocket-propelled bullets, does anyone remember Runaway, from 1984? Sorry about that, some people may have been trying to forget that turkey
  24. Methane and oxygen in the same tank is a ticking time bomb. The slightest spark would make the Challenger accident look like a bottle rocket. I understand autogenous pressurization to mean that each tank will be pressurized with its own gasses, heated by the engines.
