Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
StrandedonEarth replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
*waves hand, speaks like Obi-Wan* I have invented acceleration compensators and installed them in these rickety old jalopy ski speeders.... -
I believe that originally ears were cropped and tails bobbed on dogs that were expected to fight. Later it becam an appearance thing. OTOH, a powerful dog’s tail can do a lot of damage. We always have to watch our drinks on the coffee table when our mountain lab comes wagging around. On the gripping hand, the dog in the OP may simply have its ears splinted, to ‘train’ them to stay straight instead of flopping over, another appearance-related reason for cropping. Maybe.

According former SDC forum user and Shuttle engineer Shuttle_Guy, they call it “space tape”

Some great explanations here. Note that if you change nothing aside from adding dry mass (structural or payload mass) your available dV will be less.

Interesting. I wonder how much effect that little jet is having on the orbit / spin rate.... Probably get a bruise on the vacuum side. Kinda surprised it runs at a full 14.7 psi. I wonder what they’re using for sealant? I bet the engineers are itching for a look at the hole, too bad the OM will be jettisoned.

You included the mass of the PSP in that, right? -
Lab transfer data via relay?
StrandedonEarth replied to darkwhite's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
If I'm not mistaken, once you get the science to the craft containing the lab, one way or another, you will need to use the "Review Data" button by right-clicking the part the science is in, to actually add the science (convert to data) to the lab, one by one. I don't think just storing the science in the lab does it. -
That may have been one of the reasons for the entry burn: to keep the bells "inflated"

They need to go farther than that. They need to use the Astronaut Complex to allow the player to choose what skills the kerbals get when they have the XP to gain a new skill. Although I suppose if skills were .cfg'd, a clever modder could make that happen. And that would be enough. IMH(umble)O, the current XP/skill system is far too (in fact, entirely) passive. There is so much more that could be done with that. I could flesh it out more, but Squad doesn't seem to care to revamp existing systems, so I won't bother. IMH(onest)O, skillz/XP/AC is another placeholder system that they intended to expand on later, but became a "complete feature"

For Questions That Don't Merit Their Own Thread

And it makes for a great failsafe. The minisub has to move to create downforce. If it stops moving it floats to the surface. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/TECH/03/06/eod.luxury.submarines/index.html -

Depends how much simulated gravity you want. A full gee? I suggest scrith It's a known material. You didn't specify a real existing material... -
I let my wife stay logged into FB on my PC, so I see her Messenger incoming popups while she's using her iPhone/iPad . Incidentally, I met her on Yahoo Chat, way back before it got taken over by bots. I post on FB maybe twice a year. Occasionally I may look if a friend posted something interesting. My boss posts some good recipes sometimes. And like others here, this forum IS my social media

StrandedonEarth replied to SmileyTRex's topic in The Lounge
Walked by a radio at work, just loud enough for the bass to come through. A sure way to catch an ear-worm, for sure.... And speaking of Weird Al, while looking for the Jack & DIane video, discovered that Weird Al was on The Simpsons. -

Different heights, so not unless they mount it on an elevator. It should probably be wider to be able to load/unload 100 passengers in a reasonable time -

Bad science in fiction Hall of Shame
StrandedonEarth replied to peadar1987's topic in Science & Spaceflight
In all fairness, that required a large cruiser and it still didn’t obliterate the Dreadnaught (or whatever it was) although it did cripple it. Not sure how its size compares to the Death Star, but I suppose if you could get something to penetrate to the reactor core.... The thing is, hyperspace ramming requires a large amount of mass. Maybe a hyperdrive on a chunk of neutronium? Still requires a large and expensive hyperdrive. Speaking of gravity and Star Wars, there was one book where a smuggler’s asteroid base had a Jedi trap: a room where the gravity vector changed radically and quickly to disorient the Jedi, while steel bars came out of all six walls to pin the Jedi, with the lightsaber (hopefully knocked out of the Jedi’s hand when the trap sprung) pinned in a corner where it could do no damage. Then the air was let out of the room. Of course, Luke manages to escape... -

True, for the short term. But is an interim design worth it when they should be coming up with an engine, either new or existing, that is small enough to be clustered and that can be restarted (or have that capability added). Oh, and throttleable Or take some existing restartable large engines and cluster them under a new bigS rocket airframe *coughSLScough* -

Photo-ablative pellets to clean space junk

The reference to increasing height was referring to the cleaning sat, not the debris. You don’t want to deorvit the cleaning sat when it shoots
