Building the Future, logical next DLC?
StrandedonEarth replied to NSEP's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
How about as a toggle-able difficulty setting? I envision more of a supply management aspect, basically taking KCT to the ultimate level Ordering parts (production runs) from the factories, having set rocket designs in production and inventory, etc. Also, have research take time and scientist hours (staff R&D with scientist and engineer kerbonauts) engineers in the factories, etc. Just a quick take as I’m on my phone on my break. Maybe I’ll flesh it out more later -
Yeah, it's a shame that TLJ apparently soured a lot of people on Star Wars, because Solo didn't deserve to bomb, IMO

Star Wars Episode VIII (8) the Last Jedi Discussion
StrandedonEarth replied to Kerbal01's topic in The Lounge
Possibly the worst indictment ever. The spectacle was top-notch, as usual. The story, along with flower girl, should have been thrown into the Great Pit of Carkoon, where they would be digested over a thousand years. Poor Sarlacc. A thousand years of indigestion and heartburn. -

The problem with X-33’s composite hydrogen tank arose from the complex lobed shape. Although I don’t know if anyone has tried making a regular, cylindrical hydrogen tank... -

True, but it’s the overhang way out to the sides that makes me wonder.... Anchors away!(for extra ballast) -
Launch it Shuttle style (said with Gangnam Style accent)! I usually do that when I have SRBs. Light liquid engines, throttle up, then light SRBs and release clamps as one stage

Any coastal location will tend to be windy on a sunny day, (or clear? night) due to the ground heating faster than the water (and vice versa) causing a rising column of warm air sucking in air from the sea. It only gets calmer around dusk or dawn.

I assume they’ve done stability analyses to make sure it won’t capsize under an off-center catch in an unfavourable wind? After all, it’s not rocket science, it’s marine science. -
Force fairings to be larger
StrandedonEarth replied to vitekc45c's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Well, I couldn't find a pic of just the core. The 'roid arms were added in orbit. The problem was the six-way 2.5m docking hub at the top. A 20m fairing could have helped with that, instead I had to brute-force it. -

I haven't had to go that far, but I used Shuttle tailfins to get this station core into orbit... -

Yeah, not even Prof Calculus was crazy enough to use a nuclear rocket for launching and landing, and this was back in 1953! -

Went to Vancouver Island over the Canada Day Long Weekend, visiting Port Alberni with a day trip out to Tofino... The dog liked the ferry ride... Chesterman Beach, Tofino... Nah, it's never windy there...

BFR maybe, but BFS likely. But landing on the flame will likely melt the landing zone. Hmmm -
For using the regular function keys, say F1 for a screenshot, do you need to press ‘fn’ or a similar key? Maybe you need to press alt-fn-12 or some such. There is usually a toggle to change that behaviour in the BIOS, since fn keys often have default mappings to wifi and media controls . That’s my best guess. Although while I need to fn-F1 to get a screenshot or hold fn-F9 for a quickload, I only press alt-F9 for a ‘choose file to load’. But YMMV But yeah, with a brand new computer, I always get rid of all the useless bloatware that comes pre-installed. So that’s two things to check.

Uranus was hit by a Super Earth

I wonder if this collision could have spawned the Pluto-Charon system, with a nudge from Jool Jupiter and/or Neptune -
My past several sessions have been focused on an Eve return mission, with a Kemini capsule. Masochistic, I know. After trying to land the first iteration of my EAV in the course of my career save, I sent a KASload of spare parts to try to address the loss of control as the atmosphere thickened. After that also failed, it was kicked over to simulations in the Mission builder to get the craft perfected. When the new craft arrives, I'll transfer the fuel load over and scuttle the original, for science!. It has taken many entry attempts with different crafts and tactics either overheating or going broadside (which the capsule could often survive, leaving potential castaways) to the reentry heat. After ironing out some of these hassles I finally managed to reach the surface a few times, minus a few parts, and one of those was even able to return to orbit, despite a staging/fuel issue. I even landed perfectly intact in the Explodium Sea. I also crashed forgetting to watch the surface altitude. I thought I was running the surface-modded altimeter, maybe not... I've learned that this old meme of mine has more meaning than one... It's been a major time trap, having to deal with several (dozen?) 15-30 minute entry profiles. It seems that a 95x84km entry orbit works best from a thermal view, which makes it rather long, and I don't dare physwarp a ship that size (I tried...). Set reentry orbit, and go vacuum something.... But I'm almost there, A few more tweaks for reliability and it'll be ready to be handed to the career engineers. All 680+ tons and 44+parts of it. I'll detail the mission more when it's complete, but for now here's the modified, career-ready beast....

Typical. Whaddaya do after three days of rain? Go back to work after the long weekend. I so hope the forecast turns out wrong. But I won’t be surprised, it’s not called the Wet Coast for nothing, and Vancouver Island is about as we(s)t as it gets!

“That wasn’t supposed to be an expendable launch!” - Elon Musk in 2020 But it does open up a new mode for mission assurance in the event of a mild inflight anomaly, like an engine out or propellant leak. Writing off the booster is cheaper than losing the payload, at least until companies take advantage of cheap launch costs with cheaper payloads -
Redirect asteroid by mining it for reaction mass?
StrandedonEarth replied to zolotiyeruki's topic in Science & Spaceflight
That’s the easy part, simply gimbal the drive “barrel” or have multiple barrels splayed out around a central one. After several shots from each barrel to calibrate the system, the computer should be able to help keep the thrust more or less through the CoM (which will tend to move anyway as the roid is mined) and negate any spin that starts to develop. -

I postulated quite some time ago, before this forum existed, that the rate at which time passes is directly proportional to the square of how much fun you are having. This merely provides another confirming data pint... (Oops, typo, maybe you’re looking forward to an after-work pint too much) i have yet to see that theory disproved...

The holes in D2’s heat shield weren’t a big problem in themselves, it was the paperwork certifying that it was safe that was the problem
