KSP inspired me to design a liquid-fueled rocket engine
StrandedonEarth replied to ap0r's topic in Science & Spaceflight
But it did work, apparently too well! Did it actually melt through to make the hole, or did it burn through? Running oxy-rich will make metals burn, perhaps reducing the oxygen or increasing the fuel will cool the flame (as @RoadRunnerAerospace said) and keep the metal from actually burning -

For what Rx on prescription stand for?

Or be this guy... Edit: which is where I learned the term “differential diagnosis “ And no, it’s not lupus -

Dx makes a lot of sense for a differential diagnosis -

Colonization Discussion Thread (split from SpaceX)
StrandedonEarth replied to mikegarrison's topic in Science & Spaceflight
No protesters to complain that we’re messing up the local ecology. No watershed pollution, no habitat destruction, etc Probably easier to mine asteroids though.- 442 replies

Redirect asteroid by mining it for reaction mass?
StrandedonEarth replied to zolotiyeruki's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Probably not a lot more than other methods. Actually, that's probably a safer option than flinging rubble around the system. A bucket's worth of gravel, or even sand, would wreak havoc on a spacecraft or base. But focusing high-power lasers into a thrust chamber to vaporize the tailings into gas or plasma would be most effective and safer for anything in the distant exhaust stream. A plasma stream could be electromagnetically accelerated for even more thrust. -
Sea Dragon was a concept for a big dumb booster for big dumb payloads, like propellants. It was not expected to have the same reliability as smaller rockets, but losing a cheap payload was not a big deal. Losing a multi-billion dollar station, OTOH, would not have been acceptable. Too many eggs in one basket. Efficient engines require high chamber pressure, which requires high pressure pumps to inject propellants into the chambers. Pressure fed is not an option, especially with huge tanks to pressurize. Also, huge engines run into combustion instability problems (probably why the Soviet N1 had 30 engines!), which were never fully ironed out in the Saturn V's F1 engines.

totm nov 2023 SpaceX Discussion Thread
StrandedonEarth replied to Skylon's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Dragon missions are covered under the CRS contract for a number of flights / amount of cargo. So I don't think NASA got a discount on used boosters or capsules. SpaceX gets more profit to plow back into R&D and BFS -

Yeah, maybe a little more preparation, velcroing the guitar to his shirt. I saw a few seconds of free-floating strumming, and some other times where he had at least his feet anchored. I wonder who will put up the first music and/or film studio in space: SpaceX or Bigelow. Apparently Bigelow still isn't launching a B330 until 2020 at least. -

It would be interesting to see how the action/reaction works. I just re-watched Chris Hadfield's version of "Space Oddity" and it only showed one little riff of free-floating guitar strumming, which didn't really show any reaction. I would imagine that any wind instruments would impart a bit of thrust. Gentle violin playing should be okay, but it would be interesting to see any rambunctious playing like the fiddling in "The Devil went down to Georgia" A whole new brand of choreography to be figured out... Van Halen would have one heck of a "Jump" -
Well, part of the predictor is based on what you’ve typed before. So I’m to guess that there is someone you love whom you have (or ask out to) dinner with a lot

StrandedonEarth replied to zolotiyeruki's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yes, old idea, but not a bad one. Probably something akin to a rail gun launching buckets of tailings. The downside would be that it would turn into dangerous space debris. Might make for awesomely predictable meteor storms though -

A zero gee pipe organ... Fascinatingl (Spockface) -
I don’t think klb is that unusual when referring to thrust. Edit: although I think it’s usually klbf I find it interesting that they’re positioning it for asteroid mining and indefinite reuse. The more players (ANY players) in that game the better. I also liked the plan to use it to move the ISS to a “museum orbit” when decommissioned. Much better than dumping all that valuable on-orbit mass into the ocean. That’s the first I’ve heard of that plan aside from wishful thinking from the space-peanut gallery. Someone is listening! Is Tory Bruno lurking on our forum?

I meant the risks of sleeping. Sleep is when the brain flushes out the waste products from functioning during the day. It is also when the important new stuff in short term memory gets burned into long-term memory. It also conserves energy.
-
Presumably because the benefits of sleep outweigh the risks

Our townhouse was SWAT'd yesterday while I was at work, by way of an online pizza order with special instructions saying someone was being held at gunpoint. Our unit was surrounded by RCMP with assault rifles and my wife, daughter, and son were ordered by phone to come out with their hands up. Our Labernese puppy also got out with no leash and said hello to the Mounties. Local schools were also locked down while this was going on. Who does this sort of thing? And why our place? I hope they trace that IP back to someone....

Kerbal Space Program 1.4.4 and Making History 1.3 launching today!
StrandedonEarth replied to UomoCapra's topic in 2018
The issue is that he broke his save because he didn't notice Steam updated it. He did revert, but now it won't load his new 1.4.4 save. My suggestion is to go look in your "saves" folder for any older quicksaves or KAC saves. Alt-F5 to make named quicksaves can be your friend in this case, as can Dated Quicksaves But yeah, no more RedShell, and the displaced shrouds fixed, along with improved particle and reentry FX? Sweet! -
But even Spongebob used his “Imagination” although now that I think about it I don’t recall him reading much. I read to escape this messed-up world we live on. As a kid I was known to read the ingredients on the cereal box while eating breakfast (my intro to chemistry). These days that’s too scary to read
