I really like the looks of the game's planets. [DISCUSS]
jmiki8 replied to Bearsh's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Agree! They are beautiful! I love the sight from the Bop. -
Enough with the Criticism. This will lift your mood :)

Yay! Can't wait to see his newest monstrosities made of super-heavy parts! -
Cool video! I love this design! (I tried to reverse-engineer it, but failed. ) I've built a mobile satellite launch system, capable of sending a satellite into 100km LKO. I might make a seperate thread with download link for it.

Place the "gjTIM" part of your link between (imgur) (/imgur) tags (replace the () with []), and it will work.

My ion test probe, shortly after a Laythe aerobrake.

Is the Orange Tank still your standard "yard stick"?
jmiki8 replied to PTNLemay's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I still measure stuff in orange tanks, even if my newest 0.23.5 stations got the new giant tanks. -
the ion engine is way too OP
jmiki8 replied to lammatt's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Totally agree with this. -
I feel the poster's pain, but I personally like the new parts. It gives me a good feeling when I build a good rocket entirely myself, but it's more enjoyable when I play at more than 0,1 fps. Personally I love the new parts, and I think the best way to avoid them is not to use them at all .
-
Well, it's very similar to docking. You just have to wait until the tracked asteroid enters Kerbin's SOI, then you launch your rocket in the same direction as the asteroid's orbit. You could fix your inclination as a first manouver, then it's really easy to intercept the rock. It's advised to reach it in a small angle, so you won't have a high velocity relative to the rock. If you approach the rock at thousands of m/s, it's likely that you won't catch it. Oh, and I think the best and most fuel-efficient way to catch the asteroid is to intercept it just slightly before its periapsis. Before I got my first asteroid, I thought it would be impossible for me to do, but it turned out to be really easy task. The difficult part is to build a good rocket for class-Es.

I built a test probe to mess with the new beefed-up ion engines and launched it into the Jool system. Ion engines required a lot of patience for me, and I'm glad that even longer burns take no longer than 10 minutes now.

Nice entry, Zeppelinmage! You are the first on the list. Camaron: Asteroids have high impact tolerance, but they aren't indestructible. If you don't slow it down while falling, it may explode. Alymon: Sorry, but this idea would make this challange way too complex, I'd keep this as simple as possible.

I think untracked asteroids disappear upon entering Kerbin's SOI, even if they were tracked before.

Asteroids, Center of Mass and All That
jmiki8 replied to Keramane's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
When you target the CoM of the asteroid, the CoM will be marked with the pink-ish marker. After this, you have to click on the Claw and you'll find a button which unlocks the gimbal, making you able to rotate your craft with RCS and reaction wheels into the right position. When you are done, you have to click on the Claw again, and press the button with the "lock" sign, and the asteroid-ship combo will become rigid again, allowing you to fire up the pusher rockets. -
Nice! I didn't have the patience to max out carreer again, so I started directly with sandbox. After taming a class A asteroid and giving it a home near the VAB, I've spotted a 974-ton class E rock, and captured it. It's orbit is still highly eccentric, with the apoapsis being slightly behind the Mun's orbit (just far enough not to get into its SOI), and the periapsis being at around 1000 km. I'll build a large rocket, and get it into a circular LKO. Here's another picture which shows the asteroid's real size: By the way, how can you hide pictures and texts with that spoiler thingy?

Okay, this idea is even better. But I won't make seperate rankings for every mod in KSP, only for stock and FAR. End.
-
Thank you! I don't use FAR, and I thought it makes the game more difficult. I'll modify the rules, and ban FAR too.

Hi there! I guess most of you have already captured your first asteroids. But asteroids floating in space are still very expensive to reach, and it'd be much better for the Space Program to get a sample directly down on the surface, to further analyze it. Thus I'd like to present a simple challange: The Pet Rock Challange! This means that you have to capture an asteroid and get it to the KSC, in one piece. The heaviest asteroid which made to the KSC wins. (its weight is shown in the tracking station and map view) By KSC, I mean the territory sorrounded by the light green grass (that grass counts as the KSC, too). The runway does not count into the acceptable territory. Challange rules: -The mission can be completed with a single, or multiple ships (e.g. an interceptor ship, and a ground tractor which pulls the asteroid to KSC). -Entries must be entirely stock, and there are other mod restrictions (Get over it.) .: For the sake of simplicity, all part mods (including cfg edits) are banned from the challange, even autopilot ones, like MechJeb. Engineering mods, which show information only, have green light. FAR is allowed too, but FAR users are going to be ranked seperately. -The built-in cheats and "cheat" mods like Hyper Edit are also banned. -There are no part count, engine type (until they are stock) or weight restrictions, and points are not awarded for these properties. Feel free to build anything, which meets the conditions mentioned before. -Every way of delivering the asteroid is allowed, if all mentioned conditions are met. -Please provide at least one screenshot of every vehicle used in the challange, preferably taken during the mission. Also, provide a screenshot of the asteroid delivered to KSC, and its weight shown in the map view (without the rocket, or any part left attached to the rock). Here is my proof of concept, delivering a tiny class-A rock to KSC (my post doesn't count as an entry): Rankings (Stock): 1st - Zeppelinmage, 5,35 t 2nd - 3rd - 4th - 5th - 6th - 7th - 8th - 9th - 10th - Rankings (FAR): 1st - 2nd - 3rd - 4th - 5th - 6th - 7th - 8th - 9th - 10th - Rankings will be updated on a daily basis (sometimes it can take more time). Have fun! P.S.: I'm aware of that there is a similar challange where you have to land an asteroid on the VAB, but I think this one is a bit more forgiving, which favours less-skilled players (like me).

I landed an asteroid near KSC, and built a tractor to pull it closer. Now I have a pet rock.

Landing an asteroid atop the VAB
jmiki8 replied to KerballianDummy's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Close enough. Mission phail But I landed one near the KSC, at least. -
My engines overheat too if placed under high stacks of fuel tanks, but they stop at a certain level, and don't explode.

I want to see your Asteroid Tugs!
jmiki8 replied to spikeyhat09's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
My first asteroid tug, a pretty basic one for pretty basic space-rocks. It's just a lightweight pod, a Claw, a Rockomax-16 tank, a nuke, and 4 parachutes. (however, the orbital insertion was made with a jumbo64-mainsail combo) Managed to land this A-class asteroid near KSC. Next mission: Type-E -
I captured my first asteroid, a tiny class A one, and landed it near KSC. I'll build a claw-equipped vehicle, and try to get it in front of the VAB. The ship disintegrated upon contact with the ground, but Bill survived. It wasn't meant to be re-used, after all. Next time I'll go for a bigger one, place it into LKO, and build a station on its surface.
-
Love it! I just landed a class A asteroid near KSC. The ship was designed only for getting the asteroid into LKO, but I tried to land it just for fun (the craft had 4 parachutes), and I succeeded.
