The Elcano Challenge : Ground-based circumnavigation

Recommended Posts

Oh, bah. :(

Mine can go *up* the mountain... down? I don't know. It weighs 63 tons and only half the wheels have their brakes enabled...

Could always take the long route and go around, if you want man feel free to have a crack in a jet atv if ya have too many troubles, i do make these craft for people to have fun with after all :)

heck even just steal some design features off it to improve your craft if thats all ya want to do. (The legs are the part you would want to use)

Btw wish me luck, i have to go down the mountain now lol, 5000 meters down, no worries...

Alright, small update:

Legs 2,3, and 4 are done, currently located near the range of mountains just before the polar ice caps. My page is soon to be updated.

BTW, does anyone know a good map image so I can record my progress efficently?

I just blew the one from http://www.kerbalmaps.com/ up to the size of my screen & took a screencap :P

Nearly at the north pole, managed to find a spot where i could open it up to full throttle

Edit:

I have reached Munley kermin once again, this is the last time Jeb well see Munley in the Titan hunter, next time they meet Munley will be bringing spare fuel. (I kinda feel like im spamming this thread but i do not mind that at all :sticktongue:)

Sunset came upon the intrepid travelers, and they stopped for the night. Come daybreak, they began once more, tearing up another 5 degrees of Kerbin's sphere.

I'm worried about the South Pole. Isn't it a biiig cliff?

Oh, dear. It is... :0.0:

"Captain, we must change our course to 210* at 155 knots!"

EDIT:

"Make that 150*, sir..."

EDIT2:

ETA to South Pole Intercept: 2.7 hours. (Game time)

Hi guys, glad you're all enjoying this serious challenge. Sorry, I've been busy the past few days and haven't had a chance to stop in and catch up on all the posts.

Don't forget, Roflcopterkklol, Starwhip and the others working on and planning this challenge or ones I missed, start a thread somewhere in Fanworks, either Mission Reports or Live, and give me the link to it. While it's nice to get updates in this thread, you need to share it with the entire community, not just those of us who read this thread. This 'adventure' isn't a simple build and fly. This challenge creates it's own story and deserves a lot of pictures. Share it with everyone please.

As for a badge, I honestly didn't think this challenge would get quite this much attention. There haven't been a lot who've completed it but a number who are working on it. I'll think on it and see what I come up with. Post any ideas you have. I'm not too horrid with graphics.

You misspelled Brotoro's name in the OP as "Boronto".

Since I'm in the process of setting up a base on Duna, I will probably circumnavigate it once it is set up. I have a capable rover(which unfortunately caps at 21m/s), and it is able to house not one but two Kerbals, and I'll soon enough have nine on the base. I'm eager to see how my adventure on the poles will be! :)

Fixed. Thank you!

Glad to see so many folks attempting the Kerbin circumnavigation :)

I just kinda wish at least one person would go after it Slam_Jones style: with a tiny rover that looks like it shouldn't make it :D

Oh well. Maybe one day

Slam, you can always spot the Americans. While I was stationed in Spain, I watched the Spaniards eat seafood dishes with small fish (Hake). When Americans ordered the same plate, they got served large fish. I learned, order the small ones, they taste a LOT better.

a quick question fengist

what mods did you use in your crossing of eve. this includes any mods that helped you to get to eve, helped you cross eve, helped you know where you are on eve and any other aesthetic mods. i found your trip on eve inspiring and i would like to take inspiration from you ship to make my own crossing. see what other things there are on the surface of eve.

Sorry for the late replay Dino... I mostly used LLL for the body parts. Karbonite to generate fuel to run at night since I didn't use a reactor or TEG's, Kerbal foundries for the screws, Infernal Robotics for the pistons to lift the foils, ScanSat for navigation and KAS to fix all the crap that kept breaking. I also used KerbalCam for various screenshots and the video and AutoHotKey for my cruise control.

And ya know, I've always been told there are no anomalies on Eve but I can tell you that there were times where I took second and third looks at things I saw that were damned suspicious.

thank you so much. i'm new to modding ksp (i've modded other games before) and didn't have any idea what to use. i managed to guess that you used karbonite, KAS and ScanSat fron what was given in your cicumnavigation thread but i could't figure out how you got the screws or the boxy ship.

I'm gonna revamp my ship for 1.0. Can't possibly get all the way around Kerbin at this point. And I wanna have my hand at a self-sustaining resource rover as well...

Sounds good. Since this is ground based I don't think the changes to atmospheric are going to affect it much, well... except for those of you flying at extremely low altitudes. Once a few of you test out jet powered rovers, we may have to reconsider. I know speeds at low altitudes are a LOT higher now. I've hit 400m/s before the end of the runway.

Right. Stuck the current craft in 1.0, and promptly flipped it in the water... :(

This is gonna be tricky.

EDIT:

CRN-02 Kiternyae is under development. Features airbrakes, some used for turning, two modes of land transporation: small gear for low-speed and better steering, tall gear for high-speed stability. Should be amphibious, we'll see.

Tested to over 80 m/s.

I think I may attempt the Kerbin circumnavigation but with only refueling with karbonite and using the USI life support mod. Before I start designing a craft, I have a few questions. My mod list will include karbonite, karbonite +, USI life support, survivability and exploration packs, final frontier, smoke screen, mechjeb, and KAS. Are any of these not allowed? My second question is what are the rules on replacing parts with KAS for repairs/ upgrades? Finally, any suggestions?

My basic theory on mods. This challenge is more about challenging yourself, your patience, your design skills, your determination, than testing a mod. If you feel like a mod would make the trip more enjoyable, by all means use it. If your mod has you performing quantum tunneling, whereby you end up on the opposite side of the planet instantly, I'll probably not look favorably on it.

As for replacement parts. I took a KAS care package on my trip, I ended up replacing a vehicle 3/4 of the way through because of corrupt saves. I loathed having to replace the vehicle but it was that or completely restart. Your conscience is the determine factor. If you can live with replacing parts or vehicles, so can I.

Suggestions: Read my mission log. Especially if you're using wheels and not fueled propulsion. I used AutoHotKey to basically hold down the 'w' key for me. I have one of the scripts in that thread that I used. At 13 m/s crossing Eve, it saved me a lot of bandages. You can find the link to that thread in my OP.

Second suggestion. Do NOT quicksave while moving over land. That's what started my vessel becoming corrupt with misaligned parts and once it started, there was no stopping it.

Third, have fun.

You know, despite being the smallest body in KSP, I think the hardest place to pull this off is Gilly.

The challenge states that you're not supposed to stay for too long out of the ground, and if Gilly likes to do something, it is to keep things out of its ground. Rovers are worthless there, and walking on EVA would likely count as flying(due to how such Kerbal would go into a sub-orbital trajectory), not to mention it would take a long time. Going by RCS and staying near the ground might work, but you'd run out of propellant quickly.

I'm really curious how to pull off an Elcano on Gilly. What do you say, Fengist?

I would say... very carefully. I haven't done an ore scan of Gilly yet, but with 1.0, running out of fuel isn't a huge concern any more. I would think, that in order to stay on the ground while drilling that KAS grappling hooks would be a very good thing. I used them on an airship recently and they do a great job of keeping you planted on the surface. Beyond that, keeping pointed in the direction you want to go would be the biggest challenge.

One thought I just had, instead of RCS to keep you on the ground, how about Ions pointed downward?

The Labrador 1 has completed it's final trial runs and is ready for its attempt. Using rover wheels for it's main land travel and a jet engine for the seas, it also has a third electric propeller based system to boost it up steep hills and as a back up for ocean travel. It is also capable of replenishing its fuel stores from karbonite deposits to keep it's generators and jets running
