1.0 looks rather great to me, there are complaints about it not being hardcore realistic, but it will bring all the basic functionality you could expect from KSP (and a bit more). Ofc mods still bring a lot of additional and more realistic flavored stuff, but it sounds indeed like a perfect occasion to come back.
