StanE
Just out of curiosity: I guess you analyzed the answers automatically by searching for some kind of substring (I have not thought about that...). Would just "ISS" have been ok too?

Beduino
LOL and i thought the contest question was a joke. Really, ISS? Technically it's still on good old earth, sorry to be a pain but they dont live in ISS, they live on Earth too and they depend on Earth resources 100%. I was thinking more like permanent basis Really saying the astronauts live in the ISS and not in Earth is the same as saying 500 years ago that the sea explorers lived in the caravels 200km off the coast but not on Earth.Man alright ill shut up now. If I go live in Hawaii for a year, am I not really living there because I return home later?
Beduino
ISS is permanently inhabited, just not by the same people. If I go live in Hawaii for a year, am I not really living there because I return home later? You live there on both ISS and Hawaii but like i said it's still good old earth, like the case of caravels. So yeah 100% of humans always live and lived on earth.
Red Iron Crown
I'm trying really hard to come up with a definition of "on Earth" where being in orbit around it counts and am failing. Saying living in orbit is "on Earth" is like saying living on a boat is "on land".

If say mars was more earth like and we moved to live on mars orbit and to depend on mars resources, you would say we were living on which planet? Just as if we send a probe to orbit Mars we don't say it is on Mars. "On" = "On the surface of", to my mind.

Acemcbean
"On" is a preposition denoting being in physical contact with an object. "Around" is a sepeaate preposition defined as being in the vicinity of an object.

I was thinking more like permanent basis Really saying the astronauts live in the ISS and not in Earth is the same as saying 500 years ago that the sea explorers lived in the caravels 200km off the coast but not on Earth.Man alright ill shut up now.I think almost everyone would say that the people on the ISS live in orbit around earth, not on earth. Same as a mars orbital colony would not live on mars, but in orbit around mars. Also, most people do not equate where you get your resources with where you live. They are two separate concepts. I live in my home, not the supermarket. Similarly, the definition of "living somewhere" for most people I know seems to be "staying in that location for a few months", not necessarily "where I call home". I think you definition of "living somewhere" is solidly in the minority. Most people use terms like "home" and "dependent on" to describe the other concepts you mention. "I live on the ISS, but my home is earth, on which I depend."
Beduino
What ever guys... i could go on with this but wont take us anywhere.. our language is a poor construct anyway. Sun set.. sun rise.. yeah planet spinning around. The oceans exist because there's enough water on earth, we sail on the round ocean around earth just like we sail around the fabric of space-time distorted around our planet because of its mass. Just because we are out of earths atmosphere doesn't mean we are not on earth.I was just thinking in joke mode, but Squad is super serious nowadays asking serious question for serious contests for a serious realistic simulation game. Red Iron Crown
Is ISS the only inhabited thing in space?I thought there were othersNothing permanent. The Chinese have a small station that is occasionally occupied, aside from that it's just ISS and some manned spacecraft.
