Decoupler sometimes not attaching

Recommended Posts

If you attempt to place a decoupler, there are times when it will snap into place as though you've got it in the right place, but be highlighted red. This is usually if your mouse cursor is slightly left or of the green snap ball. When you click to place, it happily places the part, oriented to the part it snapped to and everything as if it were successful.

However, it's not actually attached. Subsequent parts will not attach to it, but instead attach to whatever is underneath, which is easily missed. The part's icon in staging will remain floating to the left. When you launch, the part will "disappear". I did not realize what was happening at first, and kept google "kerbal decoupler disappearing".

I think it could be pretty confusing to people to have parts appear to snap, but not actually connect.

Before clicking, part is snapped into position, but highlighted red:

Decoupler is not in staging, and next part did not connect to it, but connected to part below it(because the decoupler is not really connected):

With the new connection logic, this issue sometimes comes up with thinner parts. If you move the mouse up/away a little from the node you are connecting to, the part usually geens up and will actually connect.

Thanks, I am aware of how to work around it. I described exactly where your mouse needs to be to observe the red highlighting and reproduce the issue. Regardless, it's one of those things that until you realize what is happening, it just seems like an intermittent "sometimes my decouplers disappear" and can be very confusing, and I only figured out what was happening because I was taking the time to figure out how to reproduce the issue so I could report it. It was pretty frustrating until I took the time to figure it out. I think it should be considered a bug. Bottom line, the logic that snaps the part should be consistent with the logic that connects the part.
