Idea! Ksp ram usage calculator

Recommended Posts

If I knew how to code I would make this tool myself.

The basic concept is to create a database on how much memory (RAM not HDD) is used while running any given mod and create a simple online utility that allows you to input the mods you would like to use with your graphics settings and calculate how much ram you will be using to determine the maximum mod load.

We don't need a calculalter, but it would be really useful if we can some data about how much RAM every mod install cost. This should be like a community effort.

I don't think that you can distinguish which object came from which plugin from outside the ksp executable. You can access its memory but unless ksp process provides some API for counting its memory objects I don't think it's possible from a plugin.

Then perhaps Freethinker's idea of mof authors posting tam usage for their mods is more suitable

The idea itself is a good one but the execution will be a mess. The memory usage of a stock game + 1 mod is dependent of the graphics settings (texture quality, resolution, ...) and hardware. If you run on OpenGL the memory KSP use is lower with GPU that have more memory (hint : play KSP on a Titan X). And where do you check the memory ? Menu, space center, in flight (and where ?).

So getting useful numbers would require fixed settings, hardware and testing procedure. Someone would have to do it for everyone. Any volunteer ?

@sarbian - I think the more reasonable option would be that the author posts the RAM footprint on the default settings of the game. I would be like a guideline, not a rule at the amount of RAM it takes. For the rest of the data like when using OpenGL, ATM, or an uber graphics card there would be a separate entry.

I have a spreadsheet in mind. Maybe I will try to make one but it may take some time. I don't have much free time in RL.

Actually, considering that KSP itself has RAM leaks, listing how much RAM something -SHOULD- use will become inaccurate immediately after loading. I think it's perfectly reasonable to have a small display somewhere that indicates in Mb, to a few decimals, how much ram KSP currently has allotted to itself so that users, even with otherwise stock games, can see when their game is consuming too much memory and is about to crash.
