North Pole Anomaly

Searched : north pole bug , Kerbin poles bug, north pole anomaly

I was flying a plane to the north pole of Kerbin and attempting to plant a flag on the north pole. After i got Valentina Kerman out and planted a flag, i walked back to the craft and boarded the plane. As i attempted to take off again, i noticed that the engines had stopped working. The status was "Air combustion Failed". I right clicked the intake and the airspeed was 100m/s, even though the plane was perfectly still on the ground.

I loaded the quicksave again and i noticed that whenever the plane passed directly overhead the north pole, or come close to it, the engines would shut down and restart after leaving the zone. It seemed to affect the vessel at any altitude.

Edit: The anomaly seems to affect vessels that come about 20m within the north pole, at any altitude. Not only did the engines stop working, control surfaces had stopped working and wings did not provide lift. The resource tab displayed no electrical charge and intake air resource.

I have noticed that this bug is only present on v1.0.2 and not on any previous versions. My install is unmodded and clean.

If anyone is experiencing similar problems as i am facing, or has successfully duplicated the bug, please post below!

Someone finally found the polar anomaly, there should be another on the south pole.

The intake speed while landed thing is "normal" though, next time you take off with a new plane check your intakes on the runway :)

Hah, I just found this out too. My plane got stranded at north pole because of lack of air. My install is not clean and 64 bit, but I found a Reddit post that seems to have a good theory. Basically atmospheric density changes with lattitude...So when you reach 0... There's probably a multiply/divide by zero issue. They found it during the 1.0 release when we got the new atmosphere.

So... Is there literally no atmosphere at the pole or is it just a bug with intakes?

It is possible that there may be a lack of atmosphere near the north pole. There is no lift, the plane falls like a rock without drag, intakes do not have resources, and jet engines fail to ignite.

Now the sole question is ; Is Squad aware of this issue?

This sounds fun, our own Bermuda Triangle. Will the plane start working again after passing over the pole? Can I survive a fly-over if I have enough altitude?

Wouldn't explain the loss of electric charge, though.

I made the discovery yesterday while trying to get to the north pole by plane. I passed over it when my engines spat and went offline. I first thought ist was a glitch on my PC or some bug. Then I turned around to examine the "glitch"(I'm kinda stupid that way:rolleyes:), lowered altitude, slowed down a bit when it happened again and ... almost crashed. I found it rather refreshing. Like: "just when you think you've seen it all..."

IMHO this should stay as a "Pole Anomaly". Hey, let's vote !(how does one open up a poll in here ? I'm new to the Forum btw. Hi everyone. )

I did find a real bug though. when I tried to plant a flag into the very north pole, Just where the edges of the textures meet. When you move your Kerbal on the very spot, the view shifts and the Kerbal kinda falls down, hovering a Little above the pole. If you plant a flag now the flag disappears and you can't move the Kerbal anymore. Neither the plaque Dialog appears, nor is it possible to switch vessels. I ended up killing the task and planted the flag a little offset from the pole.

Confirmed on Minmus. I went to 0'/0' at the north pole, and actually fiddled around to get on the exact spot. Driving over it caused camera spin out, but that happens in orbit too. But getting out and stepping on exactly the point causes this:

Well, that looks wacky. Like you I tried planting a flag here. Doing it while in this whacked out state causes what you described, the kerbal is not just immobile but unresponsive to anything (but not dead), menus don't work, nothing works. I also killed the task and reloaded a quicksave; planting the flag one second off the exact pole caused no problems. So long as you don't plant a flag while you're tripping out, it seems you can just walk away from it and suffer no ill effects, though I don't know that I want to tempt it repeatedly. I gave the site a name I thought appropriate...
