And here's the .craft in case anyone wants to play around with it. I think it could use some bigger canards to better balance the lift (although that would likely have a negative impact on topspeed since more lift = more drag). With a little luck and patience, I think it *might* be capable of 1750 on the navball as-is. I saw as high as 1748.3, but failed to land on that run.

Testing speed planes, I've got myself a contender for 1st place! With a bit of precision planning on altitude and injection angles, I was able to squeeze 1751 m/s out of this guy [the display is wrong for some reason. I suspect Mr. NaN]. Only problem is it hated turning at high altitudes and velocities, so I had to fight with it to get in position.

Entry: the Wasp. 1433.7m/s on a Whiplash. Wings from Firespitter

Gatecrasher: my AGM (cruise missile. Gatecrasher because it's unmanned). 1422.9m/s (recorded). More Firespitter wings. This thing took off from the runway on a sled which it ejects on takeoff, it can do Mach 3.8 at 200m. It'll get about a quarter way round the planet before radio lag causes it to flip and disintegrate
