I wonder why is so hot out there

Recommended Posts

well... it's summer, what would you expect ? so just like every year the climate should get even warmer in August and then the temperatures will drop...

34C is manageable, come on :)

Where I live we often get 38°C, sometimes 40°C, together with almost no winds and enough humidity to be really annoying. But stll no comparision to my time in mexico...

It's called summer. :D

By using science :D I've been able to keep my apartment at 29-30 °C, while the outside local air is close to 42 °C because it lingers and absorbs ground heat. Properly measured, above this awful heated layer, current temperature is 34 °C.

I'm in Croatia and I'm preparing lunch without gas or electricity. :D

Where you get that map?

www.meteoalarm.eu which monitors dangerous weather in European Union.

Am I the only one who finds it unconvincing that so many boundaries of "weather", even the temperature ones, supposedly match up with those of countries¿ I would understand that if they were solely based on official warnings, but that seems not to be the case.

It's averaged and then applied for each country.

What is averaged on what¿ If those were country-averages, you would not have any intra-country color changes, yet many exist.

Well, the warnings are per county/region.

So I guess it is taken from popular forecast sites from each country, which allow an automated query of the county/region based warnings.

Different countries have different boundaries on dangerous heat depending on the normal weather for that country, as an example, Britain was in heatwave status two weeks ago as the temperatures were over 28 degrees Celsius for several days, but countries like Spain wouldn't declare a heatwave at those temperatures, as their population is used to those conditions, but we aren't!

Yes, sometimes certain regions have their own autonomy on these matters. To each country its own policy.

Come on Paweł :) Spring and early summer in Poland sucked this year. We had a lot of cloudy and cool days. I quite enjoy some heat and sun :) Gives good reason to shed pants and shirts and go all day in shorts and t-shirt.

That very much depends on where it is 34 degrees. Sometimes it is fine, in other places it really is a pressing heat that wears you down. I am not sure whether that is moisture or something, but there is a difference for sure.

There's an old saying: If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! ;)

We do the same here, cold meals ... salads, fresh fruits, cold-cut meats and cheeses (sandwiches). It helps beat the heat. As a matter of fact, in a little while I and friends will be outside (embracing our heat and humidity lol), pool-side, going for a swim, and hanging out in the shade snacking on salad and fruits (and wine - of course!).

It's actually been pretty cool here in New Mexico, monsoon came early (thanks, ENSO!) so it's only been ~32 C or so as a high, with rains in the evening cooling it off nicely (~16 nightly low---always have that sort of diurnal range in the desert).

Humidity, actually. Human body cooling system works by evaporation of sweat. In humid environments, evaporation is less efficient, since the air is saturated, so cooling efficiency drops, hence the pressing heat despite 34-degrees temperature.

No, no it isn't. Yet I could be in 5C weather in shorts and a T-shirt and everyone around me (even on a trip in Northern Canada) is in full winter gear.

This, so much this. And of all non-painful feelings, there's nothing I hate more than the feeling of sweat dripping down my face in a sad demonstration of futility.
