The Small Kerbin 2 Challange

As the name suggest this challenge is about making the smallest craft possible to accomplish the mission.

The mission:

Takeoff from KSC
Land ship and plant flags on Mun and Minmus
Return all Crew safely to Kerbin

Scoring:

There will be three categories (with separate scoreboards) to compete in.

Lightweight. (Mass)
Simple. (Part count)
Cheap. (Cost)

Additional rules:

No cheating, including alt-f12, HyperEdit, or config file editing.
No part-clipping. No clipping of functional parts (fuel tanks, batteries, crew pods, engines, science parts, SAS) into each other. It is okay to clip structural and non-functional parts.
Weight/part count is counted before launch from KSC. Multiple launches are allowed, Sum up wight/parts/cost of all launches. All launches helping the mission must be counted.
No use of unbalanced mods
No mining on Kerbin.
Use at least normal difficulty on relevant settings

How do you score reusable craft on "cheap"? Just count fuel costs, or what?

As fun as it is to design SSTOs, I don't want to make the "cheap" Category a SSTO only category.

So recovery funds are not part of this challenge.

That is a nice little Mun lander. Question those are fuel cell arrays correct? Do they contain fuel? I dont see where else it could be coming from.

Yes, they are fuel cell arrays. The fuel for them comes from the Round-8 tanks.

Did you want to consider separate winged and rocket leader boards? Its just that the only craft that are going to be anywhere near winning the current categories are spaceplanes/SSTOs. Kinda fun to encourage folks to do it with rockets too.

I kind of figured that the mass would be dominated by space planes, the parts one was for rockets, and the cost could be any of them?

But separate leader boards might be a better idee.

I love how the descriptive text says not meant for atmospheric landings yet everyone does this and it works just fine lol.

So my idea worked and failed at the same time. 10.9t 37,000 kredits 74 parts. I will post it after work so others can avoid my misfortune.

I have an entry for the "Simple" category, the Munmus.

Highlights:

84.6t, 25,825 funds, 9 parts
Lifter stage used for Minmus injection
Landed on Minmus and the Mun without landing gear
Safe return of capsule to Kerbin
Craft file (all stock).

If the LV-909 was any good in atmo I could have eliminated the pod decoupler and the parachute by doing a powered landing, and the other decoupler wasn't strictly necessary but I feel cheaty using an engine to decouple.

I think I was attacked by the Kraken 10m from the runway and my last quick save was around the Mun. No desire to do that again since this is a failure anyways.

My attempt was 10 parts, 39980kg, and 9754 cost. Planted flags on mun and minmus... and was stuck on minmus with 1m/s dV. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow. Fun challenge.
