Missions to Avert Planetary Apocalypse

Recommended Posts

I personally think it would be really cool if there was a mission or maybe just a set point in time that triggers a mission in which you use spacecraft to avert planetary apocalypse. Apocalypses could include asteroid collisions, the decay of a moons orbit, an incoming comet, a gamma ray burst, a solar flare... I could go on and on. This would also add the ability to deliberately destroy planets on purpose. I think that this would be a really cool feature.

Yeah, no. KSP doesn't need to feature Armageddon or some other dime-a-dozen thriller plot, it already shouldn't feature itself.

A better way to get people out past Minmus would be to lengthen the tech tree and reduce science gains in Kerbin SOI. Alternatively, stop giving contracts for Kerbin SOI past the first two thirds of the tech tree.

But how would you even know a gamma ray burst were incoming, much less avert it?

This is a bit science fiction-ish, but sometimes we can predict unusual solar activity beforehand by observation of other conditions that historically precede it. As for averting it, some works suggest building a giant shield at Earth-Sun L1 (and a shelter at Earth Sun L2 in case it goes badly). Not particularly feasible in KSP (or likely reality), but an interesting thought.

A better way to get people out past Minmus is to shorten the tech tree and increase science gains in Kerbin SOI, so that we can actually build the ships we want to build. The problem with Career at the moment is that we lack the tools, not the desire, to go explore other planets.

What about a crude dyson shere around kerbin made from many sattelited that acts as a multi-use shield.

Orbital mechanics will lead to lot of crashes between belts of this "Dyson sphere". Computational limits won't allow you to put enough sats. Most of mentioned dangers will just ignore anything this tiny, smashing right through your shield.
