Landing during "To The Mun, Part 1" impossible?

Recommended Posts

The "To The Mun, Part 1" tutorial starts you in orbit around Kerbin, has you do a transfer orbit to Mun, then circularize that orbit.  Then it says your ship is "fully capable of landing on [the Mun]" and suggests you try.  But I always run out of fuel.

The transfer orbit needs a delta V of about 770 m/s, to circularize about another 210 m/s, leaving me with a speed around the Mun of about 600 m/sec, and not enough fuel for a delta-V of that magnitude (600 m/s).  I've even tried stage separating then using RCS, but it's not powerful enough to slow my descent.

Is the landing part actually impossible or am I just doing it wrong?

In The ship used in that tutorial was changed from a fairly nice Apollo style ship to the piece of garbage that is used now. The text was not

If you spin the ship using RCS for about half an hour to get rid of the 3 tonnes of useless monopropellant then you should have enough fuel to land the tall narrow heap of junk.

Tutorials are supposed to be improved in 1.1

It's possible to land it (I just went and did it), but it's incredibly tight on fuel to do so. As noted above, something like 20% of the ship's mass is useless RCS, and the legs are placed in an asinine location (my apologies to squad, but seriously - a wide ship and you put all the legs at the center?). You either need to burn off a bunch of monoprop or use some of it for maneuvering. Conveniently, none of the RCS ports can fire in the direction you're pointed, so you have to burn sideways.

I wouldn't bother with it.
