techonce
THis is what happens when Captain Kirk tells the helmsman to put the Enterprise in a non-standard orbit.
spikeyhat09
Nope. in order to make your periapsis and apoapsis at the same height, the orbit would be circular
Person012345
I once tried to simulate gravity with a computer program and goofed up on the force calculation. The pull ended up being constant, and that orbit is exactly what was produced.Indeed, that's what you would expect if the gravitational pull were constant at all distance, but then, such a universe would most likely have collapsed in on itself long before life would have had a chance to form (guess). spl1nt
erm isnt that elliptical orbit? i always wonderd why i cant do this in ksp ... i know for a fact there are plenty of elliptical orbit comets ???
ramipro
@spl1nt The drawn line is elliptical, but the position of the planet must be on one of the foci, meaning it should be on one of the sides, not exactly on the middle. As Kepler said, "The orbit of every planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the two foci." In this case, planet means ship, and sun whatever it is orbiting. phoenix_ca
In a patched conics (2-body) system, no. However, in a n-body system, sure, for a short while. No way it'd be stable, as someone earlier concluded. Possible? Yes, under very specific circumstances. Not stable, and certainly wouldn't happen in KSP.
