VirtualCLD
Well, they successfully hit their target and apparently the rocket itself survived. Any landing you can walk away from...Do we know the rocket survived? Based on the vague description, I was assuming it fell over ala bodyslam on the barge and broke up. Possibly with fire damaging some equipment, but not much fire since the tanks were mostly empty.
astropapi1
Well, I'm going to sleep. Sun is almost rising and I've got stuff to do tomo today. Hopefully I'll wake up to lots of media coverage of this, been a pleasure watching the launch with all of you.

tygoo7
Well, at least it hit the target and the Dragon is in orbit. Sounds like a pretty successful mission to me! Goodnight everyone!
Borklund
Well, at least it hit the target and the Dragon is in orbit. Sounds like a pretty successful mission to me! Goodnight everyone! The mission - CRS-5 - is not yet a success, they still have to get to ISS. The first stage recovery was an experiment outside of the mission. Nuke
it would have gotten thrown out otherwise. its kind of a convenient way to test the landing system, you still get your payload to orbit, then you get to have a little fun with the stage. Mipe
If the rocket slams into a ship, can we really say it lithobraked?I'm confused here.
bigdad84
I hope they get some kind of video up and available! Maybe a little more detail of how it landed... Instead of just "hard". Still! Awesome job SpaceX for your first legit attempt at landing on a barge!

Ralathon
If the rocket slams into a ship, can we really say it lithobraked?I'm confused here.Technically the drone ship is made of very refined earth. So yea, lithobraked.Kind of amazing. We're shooting a very refined rock away from our planet using liquid air and dead plants. Then the highly refined rock flies back to a raft in the ocean using a brain made of refined sand...We humans got far these past centuries... Guest
Pitch darkness? Why no Mk-1 Lights? No power? What about homing beacon? Or landing stage was looking for X visible in infrared? Any details about how F9R landing stage locates landing site? Lander knows rough coordinates, but it supposed to land on X ...I think I know what happened: An alien UFO landed on platform to investigate strange ship, and stage landed right on top of it. I think Elon Musk examining pieces now ... pieces of UFO...
FITorion
I shot some video of the launch... I saw the first re-ignition of the first stage engine and managed to get the second firing on video. The landing itself though was beyond the horizon so I couldn't see it.This video I edited out the long dark sequences. full unedited video... mostly dark with only me and the ocean to listen to. RocketPilot573
It's still a huge accomplishment that they hit their target. "Hit." I was expecting it to miss by several kilometers. They just need a little more boosters on the landing next time.

Voyager55
Have we seen anything official on the habitat? Is it a centrifuge? Inflatable?
Nibb31
Have we seen anything official on the habitat? Is it a centrifuge? Inflatable? There is no habitat. No missions have been funded or even supported by Congress beyond EM-1 (unmanned circumlunar) in 2017 and EM-2 (manned circumlunar) un 2022. If there ever is a DSH, it will be either MPLM-based or a "skylab-type" converted upper stage. Centrifuges are off the cards because we simply don't know if they would be beneficial or detrimental and because they are not needed for the any foreseeable mission. Airlock
Latest from Elon. Grid fins worked extremely well from hypersonic velocity to subsonic, but ran out of hydraulic fluid right before landing.https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/553963793056030721Upcoming flight already has 50% more hydraulic fluid, so should have plenty of margin for landing attempt next month.https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/553964281025548289Am super proud of my crew for making huge strides towards reusability on this mission. You guys rock!https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/553964602636369920

FITorion
I've been looking around... but I have not been able to find anyone else with video of the engines re-igniting... I'm sure there have got to be other individuals like me who got it. But none of the news sites have video of it... I haven't seen anyone else with video of it... Am I the only one with video of the first stage's engines re-ignited?
Karriz
He's talking about landing attempt next month, I wonder if that would be DSCOVR or Eutelsat. DSCOVR seems to be end of this month though.
Pixel of Life
When is the next launch with a recovery attempt? No official information from SpaceX as of now, but their schedule says the next Falcon 9 launch is on 29 January. I have a feeling they'll try recovering it if they can get the barge fixed in time. Luckily, it seems that the hull of the barge is fine and only on-deck equipment was damaged.
