So just discovered this maneuver planner and while I understand the purpose of it ... I'm confused whether it should be used from the launchpad or from Low Orbit to determine when to transfer

so when u can increase ur orbital speed from launchpad to transfer velocity into the direction of the marker and dont care bout atmospherical dV loss - u can use it from launchpad... but it would be really stupid

It works best if you launch into a parking orbit, say 100 km-ish, and then use it to plot your transfer. What makes it really great is that it gives you the option to wait for an optimal Hohmann transfer or use a less-efficient trajectory which takes you there faster or more direct, while wasting spending a lot more fuel...

What you also can do, if you are annoyed by KAC's way of putting out different transfer windows than MJ: Pop a probe into LKO with a MJ unit on board and use it to calculate your transfer window of your choice. Then enter the time into KAC (or just time warp to the manouver node) and then launch your "real" vessel!
