Replica Craft

Fighter Planes

First Generation Jet Fighters

These fighters were first generation of U.S. Jet fighters. They were all designed and built in the late 1940s, and most of them saw action in the early stages of the Korean War before being outclassed by more advanced swept-wing fighters.

Bell P-59 Airacomet

Spoiler

The Bell P-59 Airacomet was the U.S.’s first jet fighter, and entered service in the last few years of WWII. Although it was slower than contemporary piston-engine fighters, it provided the U.S. Military with valuable experience that it would use in the next generation of jet fighters.

Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star

After the P-59 Airacomet, the P-80 Shooting Star was the second U.S. jet fighter, and the first to see active combat. It served in Korea before being phased out in favor of next-generation F-86 Sabre. The Shooting Star had several variants that saw service longer, including the F-94 Starfire bomber defense interceptor and the T-33 Trainer version.

Republic F-84 Thunderjet

The F-84 was a straight-winged turbojet day-fighter developed during the late 1940s. It was a poorly behaved aircraft, and it was plagued with so many mechanical and structural failures that in 1949 the Air Force considered cancelling the program entirely. Subsequent models fixed many of the mechanical problems, so the Thunderjet and its sucessors, the F-84F Thunderstreak and the RF-84F Thunderflash continued in the Air Force and the Strategic Air Command until 1957.

Northrop F-89 Scorpion

The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was the first purpose-designed all-weather jet interceptor in the U.S. arsenal. It was also the last straight-winged jet fighter in U.S. service, as it was replaced by the more advanced jets of the Century Series. Armed with the Genie nuclear air-to-air missile, it formed the basis of the U.S. Strategic Air Command for much of the 1950s. Over 1,000 F-89s were produced throughout the 1950s.

Lockheed F-94 Starfire

The F-94 Starfire was the first U.S. all-weather jet interceptor. Although it bears a striking resemblance to the P-80 Shooting Star, the F-94 was a large upgrade. It was the first U.S. fighter to feature an afterburning turbojet, and had a slimmer shape than the P-80. It also featured two pods with 24 anti-air rockets each, allowing pilots to fill the sky with lead to take down enemy bombers.

The Century Series

The Century Series was a group of six U.S. Cold-war fighter/interceptors designed for transonic/supersonic operation.

The series consists of the following:

F-100 Super Sabre

The F-100 was one of the first supersonic U.S. fighters, and is immediately recognizable by the ovular nose intake. My version is a bit unwieldy to handle, so caution is advised.

F-101 Voodoo

The F-101 is a strange plane, making it my favorite one of the bunch. The scale is a bit wonky on my replication, so it should be a bit larger. It handles really well, though.

F-102 Delta Dagger

The F-102 Delta Dagger was a multi-role interceptor/fighter in the cold war era. It was one of the first U.S. fighters that could break the speed of sound in level flight, thanks to the first incorporation of the Area Rule in designing the fuselage.

F-104 Starfighter

The F-104 was the next fighter in the Century Series. It featured a sleek fuselage and small wings leading pilots to alternately nickname it the missile with a man and widowmaker. Despite this, it became a staple export fighter, as it was in service up to the mid-200s.

My replication can punch through Mach 2 in level flight at sea level, and has enough range to circumnavigate Kerbin (provided you fill up all the tanks first). Optimum performance comes with only the two tanks above the wings filled. In this configuration, it can reach the North Pole of Kerbin (barely).

F-105 Thunderchief

The F-105 Thunderchief was the largest single-engine fighter and the largest single-pilot plane produced by the U.S. ever. It carried an impressive array of weapons, and was highly maneuverable thanks to the thrust vanes on the turbojet.

F-106 Delta Dart

The F-106 Delta Dart was the final plane in the Century Series. Although it bears a striking resemblance to the F-102 Delta Dagger, they were actually very different aircraft, with very little hardware-wise in common.

The Delta Dart was a much more refined aircraft, and consequently had a much higher performance.

McDonnell Douglass F-4 Phantom II

The F-4 Phantom II was a Mach 2.2 fighter aircraft developed by McDonnell Douglas in 1958. It served for over 30 years in the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps in many roles, most famously the anti-scud Wild Weasel squadrons. There they would attempt to outrun and outmaneuver enemy ground-to-air missiles in the Gulf War, while destroying enemy radar installments.

These squadrons would use such tactics as provoking enemy SAM launchers to fire radar-seeking missiles in order to allow other aircraft to locate and destroy the stations

McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle

The F-15 Eagle is an all-weather air supremacy fighter designed in 1972 by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing). The Eagle is easily recognizable, with twin turbofans and a split tail. Through 40+ years of service, the Eagle has never had a loss in combat, despite claiming over 100 confirmed kills. Variants include the F-15E Strike Eagle, a STOL demonstrator, and the F-15SE Silent Eagle.

True to life, this replication is agile, easy to fly, and versatile.

Northrop YF-23 Black Widow II

The Northrop YF-23 was the main competitor to the F-22 Raptor for the next-generation fighter contest. Clearly, Northrop lost the contest and only two YF-23s were made.

Nicknamed Gray Ghost and Black Widow II, the prototypes were beautiful and sleek aircraft, something I tried to convey here. Though the YF-23 outperformed the F-22 in stealth, top speed, and maintenance costs, but the better maneuverability of the F-22 won it the contract.

F-35B Joint Strike Fighter

The F-35B is a controversial US next-generation fighter. What better way to find where you stand on it than to take it for a spin yourself in stock KSP 1.2.2? This version features a 100% stock hinged engine, capable of conventional flight, VTOL, and STOL, the three modes of the F-35 Program .

Convair B-36J Peacekeeper + McDonnell XF-85 Goblin

The Convair B-36J Peacekeeper was an early long-range bomber designed during the Cold War. The massive bomber was designed to carry the smaller F-85 Goblin fighter in its massive bomb bay. However, docking the parasite fighter was impractical, and ultimately no B-36s were ever used in war, as they were rapidly outclassed by faster, longer range bombers like the B-52.

The B-36’s unique combination of six pusher turboprops and four jet engines came about because the turboprops weren’t powerful to get the B-36 off the ground without additional help. My recreation actually flies fairly well, though the wings are pretty floppy (time warp is a no-go).

The included Goblin is capable of being recovered in-flight, but like the IRL version, it is insanely difficult.

Boeing B-52 Stratofortress

The B-52 Stratofortress has been a mainstay of the US Strategic Air Command for the since 1955, and is slated to continue in the USAF well into the 2040s. In fact, the B-52 entered service closer to the invention of flight than to the present day.

The main reasons for its longevity are its ease of maintenance, low operating costs, and good handling characteristics. These have allowed the B-52 to outlive many more advanced designs like the Mach 3 B-70 Valkyrie and the B-2 Spirit.

I have made three different versions of the B-52. The first is a standard bomber version, equipped with 18 bombs internally in a rotating rack. The second is the bare airframe, and the third is set up to drop-test my X-15.

Rockwell B-1B Lancer

The Rockwell B-1 Lancer was a next-generation supersonic bomber project developed in the 1970s as an interim between the B-52 Stratofortress and the B-2 Spirit bomber. The B-1A program was cancelled after four prototypes were developed, but the B-1B program was reopened in the 1980s as a multi-role bomber.

The swing wing of the B-1 is faithfully replicated here, in fully stock parts. Building off of my experience with the Crusader wing, I was able to fully actuate the wings in-flight.

Action Group settings:
1.) release the wings
2.) push wings forwards
3.) push wings backwards
4.) debug wings. Press after wings snap into place.

North American B-45 Tornado

The B-45 was the USAF’s first operational Jet bomber. It served the Strategic Air Command from 1948 until 1959, when it was outclassed by the B-47 Stratojet and the B-52 Stratofortress.

Boeing B-47 Stratojet

The B-47 was designed to fly at high altitudes to avoid fighter aircraft, carrying bomb loads as a strategic bomber. The B-47 was a major part of Strategic Air Command’s nuclear deterrent program, and its pioneering design influenced many cold war bombers and jetliners.

North American X-15

The X-15 was a rocket-powered, high speed test aircraft that developed in the 1960s. It was dropped from a B-52 bomber, then ignited its engines and flew up to the edges of space.

Some of the flights in the X-15 exceeded the 50 mile altitude criterion for the Air Force to award the X-15 pilots astronaut wings. However, only one flight exceeded the 100km limit (62 miles) in order to be considered an astronaut internationally. Most of the pilots in the X-15 program would go on to train as astronauts at NASA, including Neil Armstrong.

Convair F-7 Sea Dart

The Convair F-7 Sea Dart was an experimental seaplane fighter design in the late 1950s. Also designated F2Y, only a few prototypes were ever made, as the program was cancelled after numerous issues with the design. The Sea Dart launched using hydroplanes under the nose, and could break the speed of sound, making it the only seaplane to have ever done so.

Space Missions

Orion EFT-1

Recreation of the Orion Exploration Flight Test 1, launched on December 5, 2014.

My version includes an accurately scaled and functional Orion capsule and Delta-IV rocket. The Delta-IV has a payload capacity of roughly 60 tons, not including the upper stage. TWR is the limiting factor, rather than dV, so the rocket is ideal for launching smaller payloads onto interplanetary trajectories.

Stock Military Craft

All my military craft operate under the flag of the New Dawn Cooperative, a conglomerate dedicated to the peaceful settlement of the outer solar system.

The NDC D-51 Tempest-class

Spoiler

The Tempest-class is the pride of the NDC fleet. It is heavily armed and armored, and can take out multiple targets while under fire.

The D-51 is a heavily-armed cruiser designed to take down multiple larger targets, though it is lacking against smaller, more agile craft.

The three Vindicator-class torpedoes are very potent at shredding through lighter armor, and can even punch through tough hulls to shred superstructures.

The secondary Dauntless-class missiles are no less powerful, and provide the most value against lightly armored ships at close range.

Also, the D-51 is fully equipped with a launch vehicle capable of placing it into a 120km circular orbit (circularization is done on the ship’s engines).

Thanks man! I may get around to the NBC again, though that may take a while. I haven't done any testing against anything other than my own craft recently, so I have no clue how my stuff holds up.

That said, I have just finished my B-36 + XF-85 (and got it to re-attach once), so I have a bit more time now.

Thanks! I've been moving at a pretty breakneck pace it seems. I've been knocking out a plane a day it seems, so I don't know if I'll be able to keep that up for too much longer...

That said, I added a B-52 to the OP, and I'm real proud of this one.

You will probably see drop-tests of X-15s and other similar stuff in the coming days.
