It's already 1.3.1, but why do you ask? Steam and gog have notifications about updates, not sure how it works with direct download from ksp site.

With a direct download from the website, you just get the files. The Linux game requires just an unzip, and no additional installs. Your PC does not connect to the internet when you launch the game. There are no notifications... but frankly, if you are a member of this forum, all it takes is a quick look at the Announcements subsection of the forum!

 

Btw, many many many many compliments to Squad for not giving in to the common misconception that gamers like to be monitored, spammed and treated like thieves and hackers. If they keep treating their customers this way, they have a customer for life in me. The way I can "install" this game is absolutely golden.

This is also one of the things that I value about KSP and Squad's approach to us. Maybe it's because it's a bit oldschool, it's just a program that stands completely alone, no install wizards, no dependencies, no "I'd like to play....oh look I have to wait while it downloads a 40GB update...(looking at you Doom)" and it's really nice (refreshing almost) to be treated as a reasonable human rather than assuming I'm a tea-leaf who's gonna half-inch it.

you would get a notification on the launcher.
