My Technique On Returning From The Mun

I just executed a rescue operation using a lander style ship - but I was playing around today and thought...What if you got into a really low Mun orbit with your rescue ship, like a couple thousand feet, and then used the packs on the stranded Kerbonauts to jet up to the orbiting craft...? I'm not an orbital mechanics genius yet, I've only just started...but its a thought.

Actually I think this is possible, but will require many tries until you got the hang of it.

The biggest problem with that idea is that the orbiting craft is probably going around 500 m/s horizontally, whereas you the kerbal are not. It'd be like trying to jump from the ground onto a moving airplane. Not theoretically impossible, I don't think, but I doubt that the Kerbal could survive a 500 m/s impact.

I doubt it. Those packs only have so much fuel and the rescue vehicle would be moving several km/s. Even if you managed to get close enough, your Kerbal would splat against the windshield. Your better bet is just to land and rescue that way. :)

The EVA packs don't have the delta-v to get from the surface of Mun into an orbit around it by itself.

they dont, but they do have enough to meet up with a orbiting craft, you could put a craft into orbit either useing a three person pod and remove the kerbals before hand or with a second ship, or download the empty crew pods mod. then put the craft into orbit, and if you botch a mission landing, and dont happen to use saves and laods (i dont) then you can atleast keep your kerbals safe...assumeing your good with kerbal RCS.

They don't need to match velocity or splat on the ship, just create a ladder net and grab on at exactly the right moment.

F5 and F9 may help though.

EDIT: It helps to turn the camera to line up his head with the ladder, then use the EVA pack to cancel lateral movement.
