Naming a Moon Base?

Recommended Posts

“Moon Base One”

It says:

-we were here first.

-we are the best.

and...

-we are going to have so many bases up on this bich that we need to start using numbers from day one.

>_< totally unimaginative, bicep flex name but I would bet money on it lol.

Just call it Bob. Or "that base over there".

B.I.L.L., after "Base In LowLand", as B.O.B. is for "Big Orbital Base".

We need less dignity in our spacestuff or some idiot might put a flag on it and start a war.

"Noname Base"

"Moon Base Zero", as we were here before the one.

The way things are looking, it could well end up named something like SpaceX Starbase, or Blue Moonbase. Just as long as nobody thinks it's a good idea to sell naming rights.

But as for what it should be: I say name it in honour of those who have died in the pursuit of spaceflight. So something like Komarov or McAuliffe.

"Tranquility Base" beat them both.

Then its lunar shuttle should be named "Tranquilizer".

P.S.
Tranquility is nice, too. After the famous Roman writer.

It would be fun to name it like they were actual towns and villages, like Greystone or Moonsville. It would spark some interesting conversations.

-"So, where do you work?"

"I used to work at a lab in Greystone but now i work as an engineer in Houston"

-"Where is Greystone?"

"Oh its a remote village in the Sea of Tranquility, a few miles away from the Apollo 11 landing site, no big deal"

The first two should be Moon Unit Alpha and Moon Unit Zappa.

And doctors Alan and Parsons should head the project. I wonder what we should call that?

Give me one... million dollars and I’ll get back to you.

If you want a name for waving a flag, it is hard to beat Fort McHenry.

Fort McHenry is not in vacuum. While a waving flag in vacuum is a must have on a lunar base.

Spoiler

Just in case: McLeod - in honor of the greatest composer of two planets, whose music is sounding on Kerbin.

You don't need to bring the whole fort, just the name (and possibly a 15 star/15 stripe flag).  And just like flags can't wave on the Moon, the vacuum is also completely silent (perhaps you can get the surface to conduct his music...).

Probably naming  them after classic SF authors would be most fitting: Heinlein, Clarke, Asimov, Niven...

But it would probably be referred to as “International Lunar Base,” much as the shuttle orbiters we’re referred to as “OV-101,OV-104” etc

Wasnt the ISS (US portion, at least) supposedly named “Space Station Freedom “ ?
