Why is this game so hard and so addictive.

I purchased this game a few weeks back, and i still havent been able to land on the mun. I have watched more youtube videos than i care to tell you. I have crashed into the mun about a dozen times. I absolutly hate this game and for some odd reason i cant put it down. Where does the mun surface actually sit? is it 400m or is it 1600???? I am soooo frustrated at this. When i do land before i even make it back to earth I am going to have me a nice little happy dance. Probably not so little to think about it. Im going to scream at the heavens my accomplishments.... dammit, just wanted to vent. Sorry.

Are you seeing your ship's shadow on the Munar surface as you land? If not, it's a real bitch to set down on the surface. Fix that first. If you are, then be aware that the surface level changes depending on where you're putting down. I tend to slow my descent to <10m/s when I'm ~3km up, and look for my shadow to get a more accurate read of my altitude. When I'm landing near other craft/debris, the distance to that debris tells me my altitude above ground level.

A dozen crashes? You're still ahead of the curve.

I absolutly hate this game
About six hours ago I was attempting to land a station on Mun. It came down exactly where I wanted it, bounced, and landed on it side. Anyone involved in the making of this game at that moment would have lost limbs, if he was anywhere near me. I fought with the RCS for 10 minutes, made up new cusswords, and finally managed to bounce it upright again.

Then anyone from the game who got near me was at risk of a big, sloppy kiss.

Don't even try to make sense out of the altimeter while landing. Turn on "terrain scatter" in the graphics settings and watch the rocks get closer.

Yes the game is brutal (that's what makes it fun). Bring your orbit down to a circular 20km orbit so you can scope the land. I also find it useful if you bring a few decouplers which you can decouple at about 3000 meters and look at the distance indicator as they fall and when they get destroyed subtract that from your altitude to get the altitude of the surface.

I think it was a lot harder before. No way to quicksave, no orbit maps, and apparently people had to do actual calculations to determine if they made it to orbit. Not to mention, the patched conics is another step to make this game be less of random attempts and more controlled flights.

Dude, Took me loads of time to land on the moon, so here's how I finally managed to do when I was going perfectly vertical I put my engine on a little thrust, not enough to lower my speed, but it prevented it from going to fast, then around 6-7000 meters I constantly adjusted my thrust so that I got down to about 10 m/s maintained that speed, and when I spotted my shadow, I thrusted up and lowered my speed steadily towards 1m/s, anther tip that prevents you from gaining to much horizantal speed is to keep your ship in the retro hrade during the entire decent. Hope this helped.

yeah helps alot, as far as landing goes, i generally ignore the altimiter after about 2k meters, by that point i make sure im no more then 50 m/s and ill go down to 30 and stay there ntil i land, even if it takes 15 minutes or so. ive rushed to many times and it never worked out, i learnt really fast, that even when i know what im doing, the second i get cocky, things tend to go all kerbal on me.

How do you use the quick save? :P

F5 = Save

F9 Hold = Load

You must not be accelerating to save.

Too OP; Yes KSP is a love/hate relationship game for every one.

When one gets there rocket design, orbits, an fine maneuvering perfect, its so rewarding an fun.

Get them wrong, an it results in even us experianced players, shouting bad words at our computers, an rage quitting.

Just dont play late at night, when your tired...

I cannot stress this enough: LESS IS MORE. Do not copy the designs of any youtubers...IMO they are all ridiculous with their designs...which you are free to do when you got the basics down! Three stages to the moon, with a mix of solid and liquid boosters. Make your lander small with more that enough power and fuel. Make it a wide base too. A good rocket design takes much of the stress away, and allows for a silky smooth flight! Quicksave is your friend. You have already found the best place to find help, happy launching! Oh, and check out my vids for a rough idea of how to get to the moon :)

Used to be just like you, now I have a Mun base with eight different flights landed there atm, and I have a Minmus base with at least 3 flights on the ground, all within 1km of each other. I have an orbiting outpost halfway between Kerbin and Minmus to refuel any trans-minmus spacecraft, I have a satellite circling both mun and minmus doing terrain mapping and kethane detection... yeeeah. My game is pretty much on hold until the next patch when I can test the four different types of deep space vehicles I've created. You shall get there too!

Its addictive because in order to earn anything in this game - you need to work like hell for it. It doesnt just tell you how to do it either and when you mess up, hours worth of mission time and 3 little kerbals become a ball of fire smeared across the surface of some planet/moon.

You keep going back to it because you want to experience that moment when you achieve your current goal - landing on the Mun! Keep at it, youll get there.

I remember the frustration of not understanding the game, built huge ships and didnt make it into orbit, moon landings were imposible, but then I watch videos, and read the how to section, made it to the moon on the demo, and had to buy the game XD .

this game is hard, thats what makes it so good, hard earn victorys.
