Momentary throttle?

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

This is my first post and I'm somewhat of a noob to KSP, having only been playing it for a few weeks. Nice to meet you all.

I've done a bit of a search and can't find an answer to my question, so please forgive me if it's covered somewhere. Apologies also if this is in the wrong area. I have a nasty habit of accidentally hitting Z while landing instead of left-shift which sends me rocketing (pun intended) back into space when I was about to touch down - very frustrating. Even if I don't do that, hitting X to kill the throttle doesn't always seem to work immediately making it hard to "blip" the throttle reliably. I was wondering if there was some way of temporarily making Z into a "momentary full throttle" instead of a "hold full throttle" and perhaps setting the regular "hold full throttle" button to Alt-Z, or having Z set to momentary when using precision controls, or something?

What I like to do is hold down ctrl and tap shift. Tapping shift throttles up a tiny bit, and holding ctrl means that the moment I let go of ctrl throttle goes right back to 0. If I need more than that but less than full, I just throttle up as I'm nearing the ground and watch my velocity to make sure it's heading downward or staying still as I get close to the ground.

If you need more than that, though, I'm not sure what to tell you. Z/X works for me though it's a lot harder to finesse just because at full throttle the difference between 0.2 seconds and 0.23 seconds can be a lot of meters per second.

Fudge that is probably more trouble than it's worth but something else you can play around with :-

Use an action group to activate/shutdown engine, then you can set and control the throttle as you wish without any actual burn, then 'blip' it on/off using the action group.  The obvious problem with this is you're relying on disabling the engines ... which you're bound to forget, crank up the throttle because nothing's happening, then remember and woooosh!  If you're anything like me, anyway.

Since the issue here is physical proximity; have you considered just rebinding Z? It wouldn't accomplish everything you want but would save you the headache in the meantime; though i feel like you would have already done this.

I re-key bound my throttle '0' (zero) and 'Enter' on the number pad area. (also, my Kerbal EVA 'down' and 'up' are these, respectively)

I, too, kept hitting either 'Z' or 'X' at inopportune times. The rebind lets me know where they are and seems to give me a bit more control.

That part could just be in my head, though.

Also, I'm ambidextrous but, I don't know if that matters to anyone else when running controls on a keyboard.
