Editing a mod's textures? (paint.net)

Recommended Posts

Basically, I want to make a new variant for the A7LB suit in Benjee's Historical Suits mod, but with a blue commander stripe. However, when I open the A7LB-c_diff.dds file, it's mostly translucent/transparent/whatever? And I don't think just using the bucket tool on the stripe will work, since it won't be translucent then? And I feel like that'll mess up the texture? I've no clue how to approach this, so a little nudge in the right direction would be nice

Hi, use the colour picker tool (Eye dropper) on the original stripe and expand the colour selector using the "more" button. Look at the opacity alpha to see what the original is set at. Choose your colour and set it to the same opacity. Use the bucket fill on a low setting and set to overwrite then tap it in the original stripe and adjust it's slider till you fill just the stripe and nothing else. If you get uneven edges you can use the "Line/curve" tool on the same settings to to neaten the edges. You will now have your colour at the same translucency. "Save As" under a new name so you don't accidentally overwrite the original and you should have what you want.  Remember to have it set to BC3(Linear, DXT5) as the type of .DDS to save as so that it is compatible with KSP.

Hope that helps.
