Mystery Quicksand on Ike

I'm not sure if this is a bug or an intentional hazard of landing on Ike, but I just sent my first manned mission to Duna and decided to explore Ike while I was there. So I sent down my manned rover with it's reusable sky crane. The landing went off without a hitch, but as soon as I drive the rover between 500m to 1km away from the sky crane the wheels, and only the wheels, drop through the surface. 

The wheels still spin but gain no traction. I can barrel roll the rover across the surface using the reaction wheels. However, this is very inefficient as the rover wasn't designed to be used that way.

Unfortunately the sequel is riddled with bugs. They haven't has a chance to squash them all.
