someone """accidentally"""" leaks KSP2's source code, assets, etc

T2 claims the entire project was a loss with no future ability to generate revenue, and gets a big fat tax write-off

win-win?

TTI is actively trying to sell the publisher right now.  Why on Kerbin would they leak the source code?

Who knows if they still are. Last I heard any update on this was nearly 3 months ago.  idk what activity they have had outside of KSP2, though.

Ok, but who is going to develop the game in their own free time (and free of charge)? Interest in modding KSP2 is nearly non-existent. I think I can count the number of active modders on one hand. What we know of the code is that it is.... not that great. I just don't think that, even if the source code were provided, there would be enough community interest in KSP2 to make significant progress.

There is a game called Freelancer, one of the best games i ever played, i wished every day and night the source code got released

Every time someone mentions "Freelancer," in my head I hear "alpha 1, dash 1"

I couldn't agree more. It's the only thing that really made me leave Elite First Enconters and Privateer. :)  For some time, at least... :sticktongue:

Everybody and the kitchen's sink wold be prosecuted or at very least sued. TTWO had sunk some good million USD on this thing, there's no way they would allow the source code and assets to be illegally used by 3rd parties. I consider a miracle TTWO is not going for the arses of some modders already due stunts like this.

Please don't play with fire - Copyrights and Intellectual Property are serious business. The absolute last thing we want is TTWO going Nintendo over us.

Nope, pretty much any project that tries to touch anything that comes out of it would get sued into oblivion not just by Take2, but by the various middleware that's included in the project under license. Even if Take2 plays dumb and for some reason does this, everyone else down the stack won't because that's also their livelyhoods that just leaked.

Corporate acquisitions are always hell, and in gaming its particularly bad due to the sheer nebulous value of IP and the way IP's rolled in and out of various hands like crazy over the decades. It wouldn't be unrealistic for it to take 3-6 months just to itemize and clarify what's actually being sold to a potential buyer, much less the actual buyer negotiations, and that's assuming they already have interested buyers. T2's not in a position where they are going to feel any serious financial pressure to offload PD right this second, their investors are eagerly looking towards GTA6 and that, barring absolute catastrophe, will probably keep them happy for a couple years. They can wait until they find the "right" deal, the IP and names don't cost much to hold onto.

I worked with a bunch of the guys who'd worked on that just prior to some of them starting their own company (the one I worked for).

IF this really happened, T2 would sue the lifeforce out of EVERYONE who dares to try and even modify the leaked code of KSP2. We're already on thin ice with the request for KSP1's source code to be released, and nobody's even left in the Intercept Games bulding to even try and leak the code and assets. Even IF this really happened and T2 played nice, the interest in actually fixing KSP2 would be so low that i could count it on my hands.

Leaking the project source files wouldn't really be all that helpful, because it's not like modders could turn around and distribute modified versions without permission.

Now, if they'd shipped unused assets in the game files with the game, it might be possible to write mods that integrate those into the game.  But alas there is no one to do that and it's still pretty unlikely.

Funny thing is there's already a mod that does that to some degree :P

It's called "It's Nervin Time" or something, though I'm not sure it's still up

EDIT: Found it (it's not the current game version but at least it still exists :)) https://spacedock.info/mod/3347/Its Nervin Time

Honestly? Why? The KSP2 source isn't really worth working with. Whether it's restarting the project or making a fan game out of it, there isn't anything in KSP2 source worth keeping. Option 1, you want to stick to Unity, in which case, KSP had a lot of fixes that KSP2 never got based on when they branched. Just start with KSP and add KSP2 features. Option 2, forget all of that, and start with Unreal. That way you get a modern physics engine (no problems with bendy rockets, if you set it up correctly) and you get planet tech for free. But then you do have to implement all of the space stuff from scratch, but IMO,  worth it. Either way, KSP2 is not what you want.

As for the assets, while raw assets are a bit better to work with than ripping baked assets, odds are, you're either going to make small changes to them, or just add new stuff. In which case, ripping KSP2 assets is just as good. In other words, you have everything you need.

The big problem is that recycling KSP2 assets is going to set you up for being sued by T2, who'll probably do it just on principle even if the game is fully abandoned. So realistically, if you think KSP2 had good ideas that should be turned into a game, the correct path is to make a new game. New engine, new art, the lot. Yeah, we are all going to miss the Kerbals, but I doubt it's going to make a critical difference to any good stab at the genre.
