What mod is that biome map?

As Bej said, Scansat . There are several new scanning instruments added by the mod to find biomes even at low tech levels. The map and overlays are good too. I use them to target LZ's near biome borders when landing a rover.  It is then just a short drive to the next biome.

I'm still in the preparation for my next large mission. In the past weeks I practiced gravity assists a lot, because I really have to improve my skills for this mission. I'm still not really good, but I think, I made real progress in this week. Sometimes I think, now I can do it, but get myself later in situations, where it's obvious, that it's not the case. Once I've finished this part of the mission test, then the really fun part will begin.

Finally did Verna landing

Then I recalled that there are some interesting terrain objects on Verna, so I went looking for them. The first location of search being the Main Gorge.

Didn't find the objects of my interest on the first landing, but I did end up next to the Verna sea. Well, some more science later, I headed back to orbit with hopes that the next landing (tentatively picked closer to poles rather than near the equator) would be luckier. Turns out, I was already pretty lucky and missed the spot by only 20 or so kilometers:

Turns out, these structures have rendering range of only about 14 km... After a quick ascent abort and some mid-air maneuvering, I managed to land my craft on that big ring around the central tower.

Let's hope I haven't caused too much disturbance for whichever kerbals that still live sealed forever within this tower...

-----

And with this I've finished visiting every (landable) celestial body in Kerbol system. I guess, it's time to go home, to Rhode.

P.S. "I love refrigerators"

L-39 Albatros Replica

Hello fellow Kerbonauts,

I’m excited to share my progress on building a replica of the L-39 Albatros, a legendary jet trainer! This project has been a mix of precision and creativity, with the goal of staying true to the original design while embracing the unique challenges of KSP.

To ensure accuracy, I’ve used real-world blueprints as a guide directly in the SPH, which has been incredibly helpful. Additionally, the craft is built entirely using Procedural Parts and Procedural Wings, allowing for smooth lines, precise dimensions, and complete control over the shape and aerodynamics.

-What’s Next?
Before diving into painting, I plan to perform detailed fine-tuning of the aerodynamics, weight distribution, and overall flight performance. My goal is to have it fly as realistically as possible in my 3.2x system. Once that’s done, I’ll experiment with liveries to find the perfect look for this sleek design.

Here’s a screenshot of the craft under construction in the SPH:

Let me know what you think! Feedback and suggestions are always welcome.

Today I started a new career, with the sole purpose of eventually performing a Jool 5.  There are 3 things I've never done in this game before; they are:

  • Land on and return from Eve
  • Jool 5
  • Grand Tour

So I decided that I really should try a Jool 5.  I've got >1000 hours in KSP, and I can land on and visit other celestial bodies with some degree of consistency.  Heck, I've landed and returned from Bop and Pol, as well as landed and stayed on Tylo, in KSP2, so I should be able to eventually do this in KSP1, right?  Right.

I haven't gotten very far, as I just started today.  I've got multiple mods installed, not the least of which are:

  • MechJeb2
  • Unkerballed Start
  • Station Parts Redux

I have several self-imposed limitations/restrictions in my game.  They are:

  • No cheat menu shenanigans, no matter how irritating it will be when I eventually forget batteries and run out of power.
  • No landing on a celestial body unless/until I put a satellite in orbit around it first.
  • Minimal quick-saving/quick-loading/reverting.  Meaning, I will only do this if the kraken shows up or we experience a RUD, we are good to do that.  But my shoddy engineering skills are not a reason to do this.
  • I am going to Kerpollo the tech tree.  This means I have to complete a given tier before I move on to the next one.

With that, today I grinded out some science and did the first couple of launches (launch, launch to sub-orbital trajectory).  I was able to upgrade Mission Control, Tracking Station, and Launchpad, and then put a satellite into orbit of Kerbin (average Ap of 115km, average Pe of 100km).  I've got tiers I, II, and III of the tech tree finished, and I'm working on tier IV.  I have several contracts available to put satellites in orbit at varying heights, and I am going to complete those simply to get the cash.  Why?  I need to upgrade the VAB before I accept those contracts to go explore the Mun.

And that's where I'm at today.  I am keeping track of this as if I were doing a Caveman run (Word document with details of launches and such), as well as having an Excel file detailing out the craft I am launching by project designation.  For example, any/all satellites being put into orbit of Kerbin (that is, any satellites that permanently stay in Kerbin's SOI) have the Horizon designation.  Today's craft was Horizon I.  The Excel sheet will track project and craft designation, project and craft purpose, commission date, decommission date, and decommission reason.  I know - way more information than most people put out there.  But I want to track my space program's success from implementation to Jool 5.  If I want credit for it, I want it to really mean something, you know?

That's why I love Excel. It makes you feel like a real space agency.

Yes, I am a certified Microsoft Office Specialist and that's what I use it for.

Success! Images captured in full resolution!

I used a camera mod for this, it was fun to recreate a mostly functional mission.

A most unusual landing

NW0gSuh.jpeg

It would not stop pitching up, so it flew up quite a ways, eventually pointing straight up before it stalled. I only barely recovered in time to just scrape off one engine.

Looks at the kerbal's faces. They say it all.

IT'S ALSO X-15 TIME!!!

Why use an entire B-52 when you could bolt some wings on?

Also a U-2 but it didn't perform as expected.

IT'S ALSO SEAPLANE TIME!!!

(apologies I am just excited by planes)

xbsN2BN.jpeg

I love seaplane time. It gives me a chance to remember KSP's water physics.

Uu9Hibp.jpeg

Yes, those same water physics that make your plane fly into the air at 1500 m/s.

But the pilot's OK. I think. He did just get yeeted at Mach 4, so he might need some snacks. Also intensive medical care for the next 5 years. Who knows. Isn't science fun?

i had a passenger jet experience the same thing, but more so. got launched at THREE KM PER SECOND.

Ok, so continuing on with my Jool 5 career!  I launched 4 craft today:

  • Horizon II, a short-range orbital probe sent up strictly to satisfy the requirements for the contract "Return From Orbit".
  • Horizon III, the first kerbed rocket to go to space!  Jebediah Kerman was gracious enough to accept the invitation to get thrown upwards, and then was even more pleased to accept attempting to hit the ground and missing.  He becomes the first Kerbal from the Las Kerbas Space Agency - the LKSA - to go into orbit.  He also has the distinct pleasure of being the first Kerbal to go on an orbital spacewalk.  He was pretty excited about doing it, but he was even more excited when he got back and his locker was filled with gratitude and snacks.
  • Horizon IV, a satellite sent up into a Kolniya orbit.  Ap of 3.06 million meters, Pe of 103500 meters, and an inclination of 63.4 degrees.  Barely had enough fuel to finish this thanks to mistiming the launch window; a lot of spare fuel was burned to get the right orbit.
  • Horizon V, a satellite sent up into a Tundra orbit.  Ap of 5.6 million meters, Pe of 103500 meters, and an inclination of 63.4 degrees.  Over-engineered this craft based on what happened with the previous craft.  I'm concerned that these 2 craft might decommission themselves as their Pe's do in fact cross at the same juncture.  Really odd that I got this contract after the one for Horizon IV.

I have the first 3 tiers in the tech tree completed, and I have only 2 nodes to go in Tier IV.  I've upgraded the Launchpad, VAB, R&D, Mission Control, Tracking Station, and the Astronaut Complex.  I always save Administration, Runway, and SPH for last, and this one will be no different.

My next steps will be to go into HKO with Valentina as I have a contract to gather some science from up there, followed by heading towards the Mun.  Remember my self-imposed limitations; I will need to send up a probe, then put a probe into orbit around the Mun, and then send up a Kerbal or two.

I apologize for the lack of pictures with this.  I have, as I mentioned, a Word document that I'm updating with images and chatter and such that I will eventually share (along with the Excel document).  As of right now, all the rockets and probes are pretty standard design for anyone who has played this game longer than 20 hours.  I think I'll start sharing pictures here once I get a lander and/or rover on one of the two natural satellites in Kerbin's SOI.

Continuing on with my career save, I did 3 different flights today:

  1. I played around with KerbNet, and discovered an anomaly pretty close to the KSC.  So I launched Horizon VI, which was designed to roll over to the anomaly and see what it was all about.  Unfortunately, the anomaly is in this big black hole in the mountains to the west of the KSC, and the rover cannot get there.  And as I have no clue how to build or fly planes, I decided to leave it alone.
  2. Horizon VII, which is the second manned craft and the first one to use the Onion re-entry module.  This was designed solely to perform science experiments in HKO.
  3. Auctor I, the first probe sent from Kerbin to the Mun.  I only did a fly-by, and at that, I only achieved a Pe of ~1 million meters.  I could have easily gotten closer, but I simply decided to just do a simple fly-by and leave the extra stuff like orbiting and more science from low Munar space for another mission.

All told, I'm progressing nicely.  The self-imposed limitations are really bringing a sense of realism to this game that I didn't have before.  No more reverting when things go wrong.  Now I sit here and grit my teeth and hope for the best!

Um, is there a KSP 1 world record book?  Because if there is, I think I have a valid chance at beating several of them.

Well, that was embarrassing.  :)

For all the precautions I'm taking with my current career, I still end up doing some of the most Kerbal things.  It's part of the game, I guess, to just do stuff where you scratch your head and ask yourself "Why on Kerbin did I do that".  For today's example, I give you the Horizon VIII and Horizon IX, one a probe core and the other a manned vessel.  See, I got these contracts to rendezvous and dock in orbit of Kerbin.  I thought "Hey, that's right in line with a real space program, and I can do this easily".  So I send up Horizon VIII, a small probe core with a docking port.  Then I send Jeb up in Horizon IX with the purpose of rendezvousing and docking with the Horizon VIII.  I get into orbit, set the rendezvous - which was 2 days out - and waited until I rendezvoused to match speed with the target.  Should be easy-peasy.

Wrong.  Jeb, in his infinite wisdom, decided to rendezvous with the wrong craft in LKO.  He decided he wanted to check out how Horizon I was doing.  You know, make sure it was still operational.  It is!  Up there in the sky, hurtling through the cosmos, its batteries blinking away.  He wasn't very happy when we at the LKSA told him he was near the wrong craft and he had to push all those buttons AGAIN.  He finally got it right, docked, and came home.  But man, he needs to follow directions!

I started a JNSQ career save a while back, with the difficulty settings a tad harder than I would have them in stock; a diet-hardcore save, more or less. I've been struggling to keep more than 200k funds in the kerbank, so I decided to start supplementing them with survey missions completed via air-deployed weather balloons. Kerbal Standard was commissioned to produce an aircraft capable of deploying the balloon. Luckily, they had a cargo plane that fit the specifications, the CRC-120, and engineers at the KSC were able to devise a deployment mechanism within 2 weeks. Parts were tested, simulations conducted, and finally, Bloeting representatives tabbing their feet, the Twin Bumbler took off carrying the survey balloon. After a short flight, Burwig and Bob opened the cargo bay doors, flipped the switch to extend the balloon arm, and ejected it. Seconds later, the balloon was inflated and the pair turned around to visually confirm that it had successfully deployed.
ballooninspect1.png?ex=67437c72&is=67422

On the flight back, Burwig noticed a loss of power in the right engine, which had some alternator issues earlier. They cut power to the left and the rest of their return was almost without incident. When the landing gear auto-deployed early, Burwig tried retracting them only to find that the right gear wouldn't retract. He cut more power to the left in an effort to counter the drag and lined up with the runway as best he could. When they finally made contact, the plane shimmied before the right gear buckled, sending the plane careening off the runway. It rolled as it did so, snapping half of the affected wing off before tumbling over its nose to a stop. Safety crew were already running towards the craft when the two pilots emerged- shaken but alive- from the crumpled cockpit. From here on, engineers decided, they would have to use some other method to complete the contracts they'd already accepted.

Hi, there's a video on youtube indeed, it should be on reddit too, tho as a youtube embed link.
Argh, sharing this isn't a good idea haha, because this thing can only exists because of the dozen and dozen of personal configs and adjustments in each mods involved, MM patches I made, custom welded parts, etc ^^ And as it's an "archived" project, I don't wanna have to deal with any support for a craft file :D
Just for scale, the "main" diameter of the core is 80m (absurdly tweakscaled parts) + it's + 2000 parts, and requires almost all KSP part mods lmao
But thanks for the interest ! and when you get youtube back, it's right there :)  :

Cheers
