Use external seat as occupied part

Recommended Posts

Seats aren't command pods. They're more like Docking ports.

So that would be like asking for something to spawn on a docking port automatically.

I just want to launch an SRB with a Kerbal on it.

So, looks like if you add a 1 man command pod on top of your rocket, and a sturdy ladder down to the external command seat... then, have your kerbal do an eva... go down to the seat, right click on it... and board it! Congrats!! You are now sitting externally on the rocket.

Optional: Make the command module your lowest stage, attach seperatrons to it, and eject it.

Caution: After careful experimentation with this, the external Kerbal will destabilize your rocket (due to asymmetrical drag), and it will be rather challenging to get it into orbit.

Note: A few, brave kerbals were killed to verify that yes, this actually does work...

Also Note: Using all stock parts, no mods... Plain vanilla (v0.20)!

To get a Kerbal available, I just built a ship consisting of a Mk-I Lander Can and nothing else (I call it the "Port-a-John 7"). You just have him EVA, walk down out of the Launch Pad area (or be nice and give him a lift on a rover you've also driven off the launch pad), then put your SRB/seat combo ship on the pad, and have him climb in. You get to kill a Kerbal and maybe toast a rover this way...

Sorry, my video is still uploading... But it should be up in about 1.5 hours... anyhow... I totally got a kerbal to ride a rocket into space... and you can see the effects of doing this cause the rocket to spin in a way that makes it very challenging to achieve orbit. Once the video is up, let me know what you think of my solution to this! ;)

First thing I tried was a small rover with one seat. Imagine my surprise when I tried to launch it that it can't be controlled. Seems kinda weird, it's a seat, where a Kerbal sits, to drive the rover, why can't it be used as the controlling part? So, I have to have an actual pod attached somewhere, get the Kerbal out of it in EVA and have them walk over to the rover and get in the seat? Strange.
