What's your favourite "old" game?

Quake. I used to install it on every system I owned for years and years, but now I lost the CD and I guess x64 will not run 16 bit applications any more.

if you ever grab another copy i'd recommend the Darkplaces engine replacement for maximum compatibility and a raft of other improvements.

Marathon is awesome (the game that almost had me buying a Mac back in the day), some pretty good expansions out there too.

Multiplayer Infinity is.. fun, to say the least.

Both Quake & Marathon have nice open source engines = run on any modern OS, including GNU/Linux :)

For a totaly different genere: Just installed fs2_open: If you like space combat you can't go past Descent: Freespace & Freespace 2. My install is ~12GB, much addon content available :D

@Camacha: Quake is $9.99 on steam. You have no excuse ;)

Get darkplaces and enjoy a real classic... at 200+FPS & OpenGL glory.

I has Quake + both mission packs + ~2GB of random single player missions + PainKeep (THE multiplayer mod from way back)

Guess I can't *legally* give them to you though :(

Warcraft III (NOT world of warcraft the MMO, made by the same people, tho), if only because i'm still playing it. :P Sure, it's not THAT old, but I think it was made in 2002 or so. The original without the expansion (throzen throne) was, anyways.

My favourite RTS. Not sure if the multiplayer is still active, as I haven't tried to do multiplayer (I'm probably not that good yet...), just done matches against the AI

Hard to say ... there have been different favorites at different times ... I guess the first among them would be

Master of Orion II

Baldurs Gate

SimCity 4 was the bomb diggity! Compare this game to the atrocity of SimCity [5], and...well...you get the point. SC4 is unbelievably deep, and the amount of "stuff" in it is mind-boggling. And it's actually challenging! I've had many good memories with this game, and it taught me quite a lot about economics and city design. I highly suggest!

Beautiful!

There's a new city builder coming out next year called Cities Skylines, the successor to Cities XL 2012.

looks pretty good

I don't really think it counts as old but I've been getting back into Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 whilst waiting for the upcoming Rollercoaster World, I only just recently found out it's very moddable.

Simcity 4, another of my favorites. Are those the roundabouts from the NAM? Their modding community is still going strong.

Okay, I just found a new awesome game.

In development for decades (and still is), I present to you my latest discovery!

NETHACK!

It has the best graphics ever! (potentially sarcasm)

Quote from a player: "You can spend years playing it and never finish."

  • 2 months later...
I used to play Sim City 2000 for a while (no mods). My best city was called Lauren, it had a 4 billion surplus in the budget. I'd like to play it again sometime... SC4 is better than SC5? Is that what I should go with (SC4)?

definitely, although if you want a new in depth large city builder you may want to look into Cities XXL which has just been released

basicly exactly the same game as Cities XL but now has multicore support

I've been playing that and also... the greatest game mod combination ever made

.....BRUTAL DOOM!!!!

(sorry, it has to be said that way)
