CHAPTER 4: AVENGING THE REVENANT

MISSION DETAILS: During the initial engagement, the Revenant RVN-043 was destroyed by a Kraken Cruiser, but not before it got a few good torpedo strikes on that Kraken. Reconnaissance vessels managed to track that ship down but unfortunately we lost those too. We want that cruiser dead. Reaper 2 and the Sentinel ATL-041 will move to engage and destroy that ship.

Reaper 2: “This is Reaper 2, moving to intercept the target. Sentinel, what about you?â€Â

Sentinel: “Once you have reached the rendezvous point, it will be half an orbit before we join you, so hold off until we arrive, out.â€Â

Reaper 2: “Copy that.â€Â

30 minutes later...

Reaper 2: “This is Reaper 2, I'm in position, waiting for backup.â€Â

Sentinel: “Reaper 2, we're en route now.â€Â

30 minutes later...

Reaper 2: “Nice to see a friendly face. Shall we get on with this then?â€Â

Sentinel: “Sounds like a plan. Looks like that thing is already swinging around to target us...â€Â

Sentinel: “...me specifically. Launching torpedoes.â€Â

Reaper 2: “Moving to engage, torpedoes are armed.â€Â

Sentinel: “It's still targeting me... first torpedoes had no effect as far as I can tell.â€Â

Reaper 2: “Firing now.â€Â

Zzl05jgl.png

Reaper 2: “Haha! Direct hit, but minimal damage.â€Â

TMQnRKLl.png

Reaper 2: “It's lost more armour plating after that salvo. I'll swing around to fire my next torpedoes.â€Â

Sentinel: “Understood.â€Â

Kraken Cruiser: “You mortal fools cannot truly hope to destroy us.â€Â

Sentinel: “We've done it before, we'll do it again.â€Â

Reaper 2: “I think we hit its targeting system, those tracking lasers are going everywhere.â€Â

Sentinel: “Just be careful, I think it's after you now.â€Â

CiHJm4al.png

Reaper 2: “Here comes my finale!â€Â

UmsnBM6l.png

Reaper 2: “Another direct hit, but minimal damage yet again. Sentinel, you're gonna have to finish thi-- hold on, my controls are jammed!â€Â

Kraken Cruiser: “Your welcome.â€Â

Reaper 2: “FRAK!â€Â

5KaCFkBl.png

Reaper 2: “ARGH! Ejecting!â€Â

Zm3tUJLl.png

UP4vdIHl.png

Sentinel: “Damn, you alright?â€Â

Reaper 2: “I'm out for the count, but I myself am fine.â€Â

Sentinel: “Ok, I'll take care of it from here.â€Â

Kraken Cruiser: “Not if we have anything to say about it.â€Â

gVn7zQel.png

Sentinel: “Agh, lost some plating. Time to die, you extraterrestrial tin can!â€Â

Kraken Cruiser: [WARNING, INCOMING PROJECTILE ON FATAL TRAJEC----////1011100001####///---]

Sentinel: “Holy crap, that was a damn good shot, target destroyed!â€Â

FqiK84hl.png

Reaper 2: “Nice shooting over there! That's one less tentacled freak to worry about. Anyway, any chance you could come and pick me up now?â€Â

Sentinel: “Of course. Contact Admiral Hanson, let him know the mission is complete.â€Â

Tense engagement there. Glad to see our heroes came out alive, if a bit battered.

Though I shudder to think about what's going to happen when the Krakens attack in force...

Technically, the Kraken are already there in force. It's going on behind the scenes, and besides, I had a fair amount of frame drop with just this scene, so I wouldn't have managed many more ships in one area. I think the most we'll be seeing in one area will be five ships, and the frame drop with that was only just bearable.

Interesting behind the scenes of what is gong on. So are the kerbals outnumbered yet or not? And if so by how much? (A lot is a viable number for this.)

Yeah, they're outnumbered. Mostly Kraken probes (with a lot of destroyers and cruisers too), but the Kerbal forces are outnumbered nonetheless. And, seeing as you've given it as a viable number, they're outnumbered by a lot :P

Fair enough. I guess it's reasonable to assume there's more incidents occurring than just the ones we're seeing onscreen.

Here's to wishing your kerbonauts the best of luck and the fullest measure of skill.

CHAPTER 5: THE RESCUE

7a6D3TJl.png

ECfb8Ggl.png

Lengas: “The descent goes well, Lonestar. I'm on a good trajectory and should land about 150 metres from the Odysseus guys.â€Â

Jeb: “Got it, Lengas. Just keep her nice and steady, because the terrain below you is a bit rough and I'd hate to see you stranded on Ike too.â€Â

Lengas: “That would be a bit awkward, and a tad embarrassing too...â€Â

7WaREhcl.png

Lengas: “Odysseus lander in sight.â€Â

Bilnard: “I think I spy some rescue vehicle, Rodrin.â€Â

Rodrin: “I think so too. Lonestar lander, you are a sight for sore eyes.â€Â

Lengas: “Glad to be of assistance. Beginning final touchdown.â€Â

SdhiH5Ol.png

Lengas: “That's it, I'm down. Lonestar, I estimate we'll be about 40 minutes before ascending.â€Â

Jeb: “Copy that. Remember to grab whatever supplies you can from their lander. Hell, they may even have some replacement components that can be used up here.â€Â

Lengas: “Which is why I'm allowing 40 minutes. Anyway, I'd best get to it. Decompressing the capsule now.â€Â

Gs4IS0Ml.png

Lengas: “Wow, it really is stupidly dark out here. I wonder if any samples will change colour if taken away from Ike...â€Â

Jeb: “We could try it out. I bet the Odysseus guys have a fair amount of samples stored away.â€Â

Lengas: “I'd be surprised if they didn't have any after all this time. Now where did I put that flag...â€Â

kCCVTkbl.png

Bill: “Why are you planting a flag?â€Â

Lengas: “The first interplanetary rescue mission landing site deserves a bit of recognition, I think.â€Â

Jeb: “Technically speaking, I did that with Bill and Bob here aboard the Beluga 17 years ago when Libra was running on fumes around here...â€Â

Lengas: “You never landed that ship though.â€Â

Jeb: “It was still a rescue of sorts. Libra would never have made it home without us.â€Â

Lengas: “True enough. Now then, I'm sure these guys are eager to get back up to orbit, so no more chit-chat for a little while.â€Â

BPlvihGl.png

f4FrmTGl.png

Lengas: “Hey guys, did somebody call for a lift?â€Â

Bilnard: “You bet we did. Listen, we've offloaded some equipment already to take over to your lander, would you mind helping us carry it?â€Â

Lengas: “Not a problem. So, what actually happened here?â€Â

XhzibIil.png

Rodrin: “We had a bit of a fast touchdown, and with the lack of ground clearance created by the landing legs between the engine and the surface...â€Â

Lengas: “...you lost your engine completely. At least you didn't lose more.â€Â

Bilnard: “Surprisingly. I reckon after this though that the engineers went back and gave these landers a little more clearance.â€Â

Lengas: “I wouldn't be surprised if a few lost their jobs, poor sods.â€Â

25 minutes later...

sSQL5o5l.png

Lengas: “Alright, is that everything?â€Â

Bilnard: “Pretty much.â€Â

Rodrin: “I've just pulled the data drives out of the computer here, they recorded some interesting telemetry that I never got around to clarifying.â€Â

Lengas: “I guess we can have a look aboard Lonestar.â€Â

Bilnard: “Might leave it until we get back to Odysseus, I know my way around the computers there.â€Â

Lengas: “They're just the same as Lonestar, are they not? Same software and hardware?â€Â

Rodrin: “You know, Bilnard, he does have a good point. We can just use the Lonestar computers.â€Â

Bilnard: “But we'll be heading straight back to Odysseus anyway after the lander is refuelled.â€Â

Lengas: “We'll just see. Come on, we have an orbit to make.â€Â

GFInj9pl.png

Bilnard: “Lift-off successful.â€Â

Lengas: “You two just relax, you've been on Ike for a long time. I can handle this.â€Â

Bilnard: “If you say so, but I'll still be shouting warnings about that debris cloud above us.â€Â

Lengas: “I got through it once, I can get through it again.â€Â

yO4lvVHl.png

oFErGeel.png

jarzy7Cl.png

Lengas: “Lonestar, we've made orbit and will be making our rendezvous soon enough.â€Â

Jeb: “Copy that, Lengas. How are they?â€Â

Rodrin: “We're quite alright, although we just want to get back to Odysseus now, really.â€Â

Jeb: “Ah...â€Â

Lengas: “Jeb?â€Â

Jeb: “I'll tell you later. Jeb out.â€Â

Lengas: “Huh, I wonder what that was all about.â€Â

Bilnard: “Hmm...â€Â

CHAPTER 6: ODYSSEUS

yE1MIVfl.png

Lengas: “Commencing final approach, stand by.â€Â

Jeb: “Copy that.â€Â

Ct7zIJ1l.png

DLD9ULyl.jpg

Rodrin: “Wow, Lonestar is a nice ship.â€Â

Lengas: “You've never seen her before?â€Â

Rodrin: “I've only seen the concept drawings, plus the lift-off, but the latter was a bit obscured by fire, smoke, and boosters.â€Â

Lengas: “Fair enough.â€Â

Bilnard: “Looks a little beaten up though, doesn't she?â€Â

Lengas: “Trust me, it was far, far worse a year ago around Eeloo. We got attacked by a Kraken cruiser and the damage we sustained was phenomenal.â€Â

Rodrin: “How phenomenal?â€Â

Lengas: “Structural failure, minor hull breaches, overloaded circuitry... we were lucky the fusion reactor didn't get damaged.â€Â

Bilnard: “That ship has a fusion reactor?!â€Â

Lengas: “And a damn good one, too.â€Â

Jeb: “Lengas, you're clear for docking now.â€Â

Lengas: “Roger that, Jeb.â€Â

Bilnard: "A fusion reactor... damn, why can't we have one of those on our ship?"

csVz3XIl.png

Lengas: “Docking complete.â€Â

Malrick: “Refuelling the lander now.â€Â

Rodrin: “I guess we'll just wait in here before heading on over to Odysseus then.â€Â

Jeb: “Sorry guys, but you're gonna have to come aboard our ship.â€Â

Bilnard: “What? Why?â€Â

Jeb: “I have some, err, bad news for you two...â€Â

Rodrin: “Have we been stranded?â€Â

Jeb: “It's probably best you look at this...â€Â

*Jeb passes a laptop over to Bilnard*

Bilnard: “No...â€Â

Rodrin: “What is it?â€Â

Bilnard: “Odysseus, she's... she's gone.â€Â

Rodrin: “Gone? What do you mean 'gone'?â€Â

Bilnard: “Take a look.â€Â

Rodrin: “What? NO!â€Â

Bilnard: “How did this happen?!â€Â

Jeb: “We've been looking into that, and we think we have an answer.â€Â

Bob: “That debris field orbiting below us? There are fragments of both Odysseus and a Kraken probe.â€Â

Rodrin: “A probe?! A damned probe destroyed Odysseus?!â€Â

Bilnard: “Don't get too worked up, Rodrin...â€Â

Rodrin: “It's just... how?!â€Â

Bilnard: “Jeb, what about Dilcott, is he ok?â€Â

Jeb: “That's what we're about to find out. We have the coordinates of what looks to be a crash site. Lengas, take the lander back down.â€Â

Lengas: “Alright. Guys, I'll bring Dilcott back, I promise.â€Â

Bilnard: “Just be careful.â€Â

Lengas: “I will, don't worry. Jeb, I'll see you in about two hours?â€Â

Jeb: “Aye.â€Â

RqGqpibl.png

fgPApn7l.png

Lengas: “Beginning descent.â€Â

Bill: “Roger that, your trajectory is good.â€Â

RskkMgUl.png

N5Pd8ZYl.png

ThnyhtDl.png

Lengas: “Odysseus just appeared on short range sensors.â€Â

Jeb: “Take it nice and easy now, that's our former ship.â€Â

aFQWYVyl.png

Lengas: “Touchdown in five seconds...â€Â

*Thump*

Lengas: “And I'm down, shutting down engine, lowering ladder.â€Â

Bilnard: “What do you see?â€Â

Lengas: “A disheartening scene.â€Â

Bilnard: “Dilcott?â€Â

Lengas: “I can't tell yet.â€Â

x7ckUH3l.png

JsqNfVfl.png

Lengas (under breath): “Let's go and have a look then, Lengas...â€Â

IoemrYFl.png

Lengas: “Mother of Kerbin, this is awful. Lonestar, are you getting these pictures?â€Â

Bob: “Yeah, we are. Damn...â€Â

Lengas: “Hold on, I can see Dilcott... he looks fine!â€Â

Bilnard: “After all this?!â€Â

Lengas: “Dilcott, can you hear me?â€Â

Dilcott: “Well, you sure took your time, didn't you Lengas?â€Â

Two things. Firstly thank god that Odysseus destroyed the Kraken. Secondly Odysseus, doesn't look to bad. Yes it is in a million pieces and yes it did fall over after a fight into Ike, but it seems to be that their are at least one or two engines part of the hull and the main flight deck. Well now for the million dollar question. Odysseus 2?

Whew. No fatalities. If memory serves me right, Odysseus was unarmed - right? So how it did manage to take the Kraken Probe out? Did Dilcott ram it? Hmm, or maybe he used Ksinti Lesson and used main engines as a blowtorch to melt the Probe?
