Darpa BigDog Robot

I came across this video of Darpa's BigDog Robot.

You may have seen some of this before, but later in the video it shows the newer versions (about 6:50 video time).

I think it's an interesting project for basic robotic research and as long as they don't go crazy with the funding it is the kind of basic research I think the government should be funding.

I wouldn't want the military fielding these things as the US Marines now do it better and cheaper with real mules, but this is the kind of applied engineering that can trickle down into the civilian sector.

I was amazed when I saw it able to run, but this new one with the ability to right itself up and recover from slipping is amazing. It really blew me away when it threw that cinder block about 15 feet! Can't wait to see where this thing goes.
