Collectibles from planets + showcase in KSC?

Recommended Posts

I did a quick search on the forum and it seems it was not suggested before...

I think it'll be nice if Kerbals could collect "something" from the planets and return them to KSC for "studying".

I'm not talking about easter eggs. There're just too few of them and not enough variety.

There should be multiple stuff that are worthwhile to be returned to Kerbin:

e.g. Polar ice cubes from Duna, "Soup" and dirt from Eve (Why? Why is it purple?), a jar of green gas scooped up from Jool... etc.

To take this further, let's have a "trophy hall" in KSC that let us show off for bragging rights.

The collection action would be strictly limited to Kerbals so we have a bigger incentive to send Kerbals instead of probes.

Plus, a bigger incentive to rescue them instead of leaving them stranded.:sticktongue:

Pretty sure they're planning on having an achievement-based museum in the game. It'll keep track of things you've accomplished and hopefully let you walk around inside and look at your displays. Or something like that.

Maybe it'll just be a UI thing you navigate through, who knows? Either way, they could add these types of little trophies to the list of crap you put in your museum. I'd be down for that :o

Perhaps there could be some things that you can find that are only found in one part of the planet. It could be randomly generated where they appear, and you could use a device on your ship which, once you were on the ground, displays your distance from the "unknown object". Using this distance you could triangulate the position of the object and bring it home for display in your museum (and perhaps a cash bonus).

This is actually a rather awesome idea. You should definitely be able to museumify certain goodies you discover on other planets. Rock samples of course, and maybe things like pictures of planetary locations, rovers/satellites recovered safely from other worlds, and heroic tales of missions' past, such as the first plate of Space Kraken Calamari.

Another thing is said museum should be somehow persistent across space programs, or atleast backup-able in the event of a critical failure due to a game update or bad mod or something destroying one's campaign, so you could have a memento-mori of space programs past, but also the ability to wipe the slate clean with a new game.

Sort of like the trophy hall thing in civilization revolution maybe? where you could see kerbals walking around it, messing around, doing kerbal things, maybe have model ships you were especially proud of. You could move down the hall by scrolling maybe, and still maintain camera controls.

Kerbal Space Museum.....I like it!

Ah yes yes, "Museum" was the thing that was in my mind, but somehow this word slipped right past.

I'm thinking (hoping) that it will be a full featured scenery like the inside of VPH / VAB, plus navigation via an EVAed Kerbal, like what boomerdog2000 has suggested:

Also, presenting a mininature replica of the spacecraft alongside with the collected item would be super cool.

Although a mission to drag the Kraken back for studying would be interesting.

Still, +1!

I, personally, had a plan to study the Kraken which involves a large amount of batter and hot oil.

Rather than one-off trophy, I'd prefer rock/liquid/atmospheric samples that when statistically tallied and analyzed, would reveal the composition of the celestial body.

Actually my idea had no relationship with the "Oh you got to Duna" type of trophy but actually collecting stuff on the planets.

And yes, that's a cool idea that if we got enough stuff back from Eve we might eventually confirm that its really made from grape jelly.
