For Mun landings, what altitude above the Mun is it best to transfer to.

When launching from Kerbin to the Mun, what trajectory should I follow? Do I want to be as close to the Mun as possible for my (lunar periapsis) insertion burn, or as far away as possible?

I'm thinking the fomer because, all summed, it would probably use the least delta-v: the further away you are, the cheaper it is to make adjustments; the closer you are, the more accurate you can be.

I tend to try to get a stable apoapsis about 10km above the surface, however, if I have a specific LZ in mind I adjust my inclination well before I perform my circularization maneuver. i.e if I plan to land in one of the polar craters I would adjust my angle just inside Mun's SOI and then place my periapsis where I wanted it, then circularize at periapsis and perform a landing maneuver from there.

The challenge is quite old now (please don't necro it), but the principles still hold true. There's a lot of good information in there, so look through it if you're interested and hopefully it will help.

Of course, this assumes that by "best" you mean "most efficient."
