Will we ever adjust the "zero-year" of our calendar? What's a good alternative?

Theocratic forces? Last time I checked, most wars tend to be fought over the control of resources (or the defense of that control), regardless of other rationale.

This is true. It also has nothing to do with what I said.

One bad thing about the current system is there is no year 0. 10BC to 10AD is only 19 years, which strikes me as idiotic.

Correct me if I'm wrong but 0 is a point in time between 1CE and 1BCE. Between the beginning of 1BCE and the end of 1CE you have two years, right?

"Because you dunno" is correct. Why not mitigate that failure by reading?

Aww, did assuming I'm uneducated help make you feel superior?

I have read about it. It makes no more sense than it did beforehand. All I see is another lame excuse to launch a crusade, just like all the other lame excuses for launching crusades.

Are you sure you want to stick with that one? I've seen you do three edits so far, so I'm really not imbued with confidence. I don't need to resort to bratty tactics in order to feel superior because I have logic, scepticism and objectivity on my side. What I said was sincere; I was aiming for your super-ego, but it made its way to your id, which is not my fault, although I could have predicted it. Because of this it seems like you're merely projecting your own understanding of social dynamics onto me. Lastly don't just use words like "assumption". Learn to differentiate between assumption, induction, and deduction.

Simplistic and disingenuous comments deserve no respect in my opinion and if a jaded encouragement to read seems shrill to you then we have nothing more to say to each-other.

Getting a little harsh are we people? Try to respect or at least 'Tolerate' other people's opinions. Friendly arguments are fine, but don't go to far.

Yes, although I don't understand why you put "tolerance" in quotes. Sometimes tolerance is the most that some viewpoints deserve. I don't get why people think that freedom of speech means that every view point is equally valid. Trolls obviously deserve no respect.

Yes, because editing posts is a true sign of evil. Actually, all you're doing is further-supporting what I implied. Now you're smoke-screening by using college-level vocabulary instead of high-school. "Why not mitigate that failure by reading?" is blatantly bratty. I've seen it thousands of times on different forums, and it is always used in the same way. It's a way of telling someone they're stupid, while trying to make it look somehow more intellectual than a 4th grade insult. I'm surprised that you brought ID vs. Superego into the discussion at all. Your original jab certainly did NOT come from your Superego, and neither does your "I have logic, scepticism and objectivity on my side" claim.

But prey-tell, why did you mention skepticism and objectivity? Where in this argument do those two things even apply?

Yes, although I don't understand why you put "tolerance" in quotes. Sometimes tolerance is the most that some viewpoints deserve. I don't get why people think that freedom of speech means that every view point is equally valid. Trolls obviously deserve no respect.

Tolerance doesn't mean treating each viewpoint like it is equally valid. It DOES however mean that one can argue against a viewpoint without being an elitist jerk about it.

And Trolls? Really? Speaking of assumptions...

.....

This is all off topic, and I already gave you all the rope you wanted, so I'm out. If you want to continue tightening that noose then PM me.

Please enlighten me. Thanks.

I wasn't talking about any previous wars, that's all.

I only imagined an unlikely scenario.

Looks like this discussion's been getting a bit off-course and also a bit heated. I'll be closing this temporarily while we get things sorted out so that we can get it back on the rails...

EDIT: After further review, we of the moderation staff have determined that, while it's an interesting subject and worthy of discussion, it's not one suited for our forums. We have rules against "discussions of a political, ideological or religious nature," and due to the nature of the way the current calendar's "zero year" has been chosen and the implications thereof, it's extremely difficult to discuss the subject in a productive manner without slipping into religious or ideological territory. There's a good reason we have that particular rule in place, as the increasingly vitriolic tone of the last few pages bears witness to.

As a final note, please remember that personal attacks, accusations of trolling, and other such remarks are also against forum rules. While there's nothing wrong with a reasonable debate involving coherent and well-constructed arguments, don't let your disagreements turn personal.
