Bailed out!

I noticed on Scott Manley's Asteroid Redirection stream, an EVA in the atmosphere produces a "Bailed Out" image on the portrait. SKip to 2:01:11

I wonder if this means KIA, and what happened to Jeb. Did he EVA, but the camera doesn't switch to the EVA, did he disappear? Does this bring him death, does this bring him to the Astronautical Complex again? Why am I asking you? Let's just wait for the update.

At the very end Scott switches to a Kerbal somewhat glitched into Kerbin. I don't think the "bailed out" graphic has any real effect on what happens to the Kerbals themselves.

It'd be totes sweet if "Bailed Out" did auto-recover them, but I doubt it. I see little point doing that instead of the already oft-requested Kerbal parachutes.

WAIT.

When the Kerbal drifts 2.5km away from his plane, he'll disappear, right? What if "Bailed Out" auto-recovers him to save him from auto-disappearing?!?!?

Crossing fingers now.

edit: Or, now that I've seen the video, perhaps bailing out is supposed to bamf the Kerbals to a nearby point on the ground.

My guess would be that EVA'ing your Kerbals from now on won't automatically switch cameras - useful if you feel the need to get all your Kerbals out in a hurry.

Of course, i could be wrong, but thats what it looks like to me. I'd say the Kerbals appearing on/under the ground isn't intended. :3

Thing I found more interesting is that it didn't blowup on impact, and this makes me want to put them down at KSC. The reason being is that while there is not science attached to them at this time, there will come a point that there could be points and rewards attached to them through contracts to get data from them. Nothing easier to do if they are right out your front door!

I don't think that this is a new feature; I seem to recall it appearing in a bugged out capsule I had a few versions ago.

No, I think you're thinking of the proken KIA that appears on Kerbal Portraits in a bugged way.
