What does it mean to be Whackjob in KSP now?

Whackjob

Hokay. Stuck in rut. Was stuck in a rut before, stuck in a rut again.

What does it mean to be Whackjob in KSP now? Launching the large and implausible? With the new parts, everyone can be Whackjob, if they so choose. The challenge that was once there is now haflway gone. I've had about fifteen different projects that I worked on and abandoned. Just didn't seem difficult like it used to be, and making the impossible and improbable is what I found so pleasing.

Not that I'm complaining, or that any of this is a bad thing, mind you. I love the new parts. I cannot complain one whit there. Just... where do I go from here? The lines have shifted in the sand, north is west and pseudotuxedo night at the local bar is now replaced with shrimp night.

I think I need to find a new direction, a new "Whackjobness" to work towards. Got nothin' so far. Figured I'd throw that out there, see what you folks say, see if something grabs me.

I still owe you guys a couple downloadable crafts for the kind donations.

Take one of every asteroid to Jool in one mission? It would be something that is not easily done, and with some of the craziness I have seen from you I believe that would be the prefect "Whackjobness".

Cheer up Whack :) You are a living legend of KSP community already. As for direction...sky's the limit :D No, seriously - just take a look at Mission Reports section. Grand Tours big and small, semi-self-sufficient planetary bases on Duna and Laythe. Heck, bases on Moho and Eve if you want hardcore experience. Floating airship-bases in Jool atmosphere. Single stage Tylo landers, able to land, take off and reach orbit without shedding a single part. Big science station in very low Kerbol orbit. Hell, try to build a giant cork and plug the Mohole :D

dunno, land an E class on top of the VAB? though I feel that probably somebody has already done that, the new parts makes anything improbable quite feasible.

Don't you see whackjob? all of these suggestions STILL have to do with the original whackjobness. The new parts make the old whackjobness somewhat easier, but do you know what else they do? they unlock a whole new level of whackjobness. You can do so much more, and with the new parts most people would struggle to accomplish what you have already accomplished. You are still whackjob, and you still have the "whackjobness" in you. I just grew a meter in size. :) Look at my sig. It relates to you. I havent even really seen one of your creations, i havent really followed you that much either. (YET) but i have heard so many stories. so many references to you. You are a legacy here. Everyone knows who you are. everyone knows what you are capable of. You say you are stuck in a rut? Build a rocket big enough to lift you right up out of that rut. :)

Build a Dyson Ring around Minmus.

Put two Class E Asteroids on a collision course and see what happens when they hit each other at high speed. I'm betting the physics engine breaks and is found hiding under the stairs, sucking its thumb, rocking back and forth muttering 'IhateyouIhateyouIhateyou...'

Cities In Flight. Build a little Kerbal city, a good 30 or 40 inhabitants... then make it fly. It should be able to land places too. We're talking like 2,000 parachutes to land on Eve. Extract Kethane to refuel, repack all the chutes and then launch again.

Since he mainly builds big there is one big issue and that is the part count limit.

Well... this might sound a bit silly, but... if you want to return to the old level of Whackjob-Ness, maybe... ignore the new parts. I know I did; as someone who plays mostly sandbox, the new parts feel a bit unbalanced and OP... so I just ignored them. You want a challenge, Whack? build something big enough that it's a struggle to lift it with the 3.75 meter parts. Better yet, build one ship. One ship that will intercept an asteroid and land it on Kerbin. It dosen't matter what size. No parachutes. No 3.75 meter parts. No refueling. No orbital assembly. Just you, boosters, lag, and the forums. I mean, if you really wanted to go for it, land 5 asteroids next to each other in order of size. If you want to know my opinion: Do what you want. Do whatever you find fun. We'll love it anyways.

Build what you built before, now with 3.75m parts. Exemplary challenges:

-Record payload to LKO. 5,000 tons is a good first goal.

-Record velocity. .2c is a good first goal.

-Record asteroid haul to Mohoian surface with one craft.

-Most massive LKO station. 50,000 tons is a good first goal.

-Duxwing

Ah, but that's the ticket. He can still do 800 part monstrosities, it's just that the power and utility of them will be much greater with the larger parts.

And to be Whackjob is to inspire, amuse, and quite often frighten the rest of us, as well as the physics engine with whatever projects you find enjoyable. Hell, take a spin with Infernal Robotics. Make some awesome mecha. I would hazard a guess that a Whackjobian mecha would tower with one foot on either side of the VAB :P
